In a surprise outing, Kate Middleton joined her husband, Prince William, during a visit to the place where civilians were attacked and killed during a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance class this summer.
During her visit, Middleton wore a long double breasted brown coat with a maroon dress underneath. The outfit was paired with a pair of gold earrings in the shape of ferns.
According to People, Middleton has been noted wearing the earrings before. Designed by Catherine Zoraida, ferns often symbolize “endurance, resilience, and a new beginning,” Simply Beyond Herbs reports.
In Japan, the fern symbolizes new life and family. In Celtic for, ferns are often associated with fairies and magic.
And in Māori culture, the fern is a symbol of strength.
Considering her own hardships this year following her cancer diagnosis, and the reason for their royal outing, the fern earrings seem like a specific choice.
Following their outing, the Prince and Princess of Wales took to their Instagram account to share a statement.
“We continue to stand with everyone in Southport. Meeting the community today has been a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting one another in the wake of unimaginable tragedy,” they wrote.
“You will remain in our thoughts and prayers,” the continued, signing the statement, “W & C.”
This was Middleton’s first outing since revealing she has completed her chemotherapy treatments in September.
]“As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” she said in the video.
“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”
While the princess said her focus remains on “doing what I can to stay cancer free,” she is “looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.”
