King Charles and Prince William have cancelled the remaining outings on their calendar for this week.
In a statement shared by Buckingham Palace, the decision to cancel the public outings comes on the heels of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s call for a surprise general election on July 4.
According to the Buckingham Palace, the Royal Family is postponing engagements “which may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign.”
The statement read, “Following the Prime Minister’s statement this afternoon calling a general election, the royal family will – in accordance with normal procedure – postpone engagements that may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign.”
As a result, this will likely mean King Charles and Prince William will not be regularly seen in the public between now and July 4.
“Their Majesties send their sincere apologies to any of those who may be affected as a result.”
The unexpected break comes as King Charles and Princess Catherine continue to battle cancer.
