Certain Women premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016 to great acclaim, further cementing writer/director Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, First Cow) as one of America’s most skilled auteurs. The film follows the lives of four women whose lives intersect in interesting ways. Stewart plays a young lawyer who teaches an educational law class and meets a rancher named Jamie in a chance encounter. It’s an excellent movie and Stewart exhibits so much restraint in her performance as Beth.

Clouds of Sils Maria (2014)

Clouds of Sils Maria marks the start of collaboration on two Kristen Stewart movies with celebrated French filmmaker Olivier Assays (Non-Fiction, Summer Hours). The film finds Stewart opposite living legend, Juliette Binoche (The English Patient, Chocolat) who plays an aging actor who finds herself reflected in Stewart’s character.

The backdrop of the film is the actor’s return to a play that launched her career. The narrative elements from the play start to bleed over into the actor’s real life and change the relationship she has with her personal assistant (played cleverly by Stewart). It’s sneakily creepy and endlessly watchable thanks in no small part to the film’s amazing cast.

Personal Shopper (2016)

IMDB

Here’s the second of the Kristen Stewart movies directed by Olivier Assays. Personal Shopper takes the creepy factor that you feel while watching Clouds of Sils Maria and cranks it up to 1000. Stewart plays Maureen who is a personal shopper in Paris. She refuses to leave the city because her twin brother had died there and she still feels a connection to him. Things get weird when Maureen receives a mysterious text and the film basically turns into a slow-burn horror movie. Both of the Assays films are excellent but Personal Shopper proves the more affecting. Give it a shot!

In the midst of the vampire/werewolf movies, there were other Kristen Stewart movies being filmed as well. In 2009, she starred opposite Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Zombieland) in Adventureland which proved to be a solid romantic comedy. If you’re looking for a lighter movie after Spencer, give this one a try. Stewart plays Em who is befriended by a newly hired James (Eisenberg) at a local amusement park. They kindle a friendship which turns into something more!

Julianne Moore plays Alice Howland a linguistics professor who is diagnosed with familial Alzheimer’s disease shortly after her 50th birthday. Yes, a Christmas romantic comedy that premiered on Hulu is one of the best Kristen Stewart movies. Happiest Season is the sapphic rom-com of your dreams and finds Stewart opposite Mackenzie Davis (Station Eleven, Halt and Catch Fire). The pair play a couple who experience a range of highs and lows as they try not to ruin Christmas for one another. It’s very sweet and really funny and the type of Christmas movie the world really needed in 2020.

Camp X-Ray (2014)

IMDB

One of the Kristen Stewart movies that she completely saved from itself was Camp X-Ray. The film feels ham-handed with the handling of its characters throughout but performances by Stewart and Payman Maadi (A Separation, 13 Hours) make the movie a must-watch. Stewart plays a guard at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp who makes an unlikely connection with a prisoner (Maadi). It’s tense at times and warm others and Stewart really delivers despite the material.

The Runaways (2010)

IMDB

One of the most underrated Kristen Stewart movies is The Runaways which stars Stewart as the rock legend, Joan Jett, and Dakota Fanning (I Am Sam, War of the Worlds) as Cherie Currie. Viewers expected an in-depth biopic from the film that was actually more about the electric energy of their music and their characters’ friendship. You’re treated to killer performances from Stewart and Fanning if nothing else.

Lizzie (2018)

IMDB

One of the Kristen Stewart movies that makes you reevaluate what you thought you knew about a thing, Lizzie asks audiences to revisit the Lizzie Borden true-crime tale. The film is a bit clumsy at times but Stewart, who stars opposite Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don’t Cry, We Are Who We Are), plays Bridget Sullivan who is having an affair with Borden (Sevigny). Tensions continue to rise as the film goes on, exploding to a violent breaking point.

Spencer (2021)

IMDB

We’ve talked about Spencer a couple of times now, but we’d like to end this list with the film that’s currently getting tons of buzz thanks to Stewart’s breathtaking performance. The actor transforms into Princess Diana and she plays the part with paranoia and electric energy that is on best display when we see her playing Diana with her children, Prince Harry and Prince William. It’s one of the most buzzworthy Kristen Stewart movies and for good reason. It’s a beautiful interpretation of the events near the end of her life and turns them into poetry.

Director, Pablo Lorrain has a knack for taking real-life stories and crafting them into beautiful works of cinematic art. We saw him previously tackle First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in Jackie and poet Pablo Neruda in Neruda.

\There you go! What Kristen Stewart movies are you going to watch first? We hope you’ve found some that you want to try. She’s one of the most varied and talented actors in the business today and we can’t wait to see what she does next (including her feature directorial debut with The Chronology of Water).
