Lala Kent is blaming a vegan meal she had eaten on a breastfeeding scare involving her baby girl who was born on March 15. The Vanderpump Rules star said in a recent social media post that she “felt so terrible that I did that to my sweet girl.”
On Sunday, Kent revealed that she had experienced one of her most difficult days with her young baby named Ocean because of the incident.
Lala Kent Learned the Hard Way That Certain Foods She Eats Will Affect Her Breastfeeding Baby.
“Yesterday was one of our hardest days,” Kent shared via her Instagram Story. “I was aware certain foods could mess with my babies [sic] tummy, but never worried too much. I had vegan food for lunch- beans, cauliflower, etc. I’m sure you’re all thinking ‘you’re an idiot, those foods give grown people gasses!”
“Ocean screamed, cried and fussed, from morning until night,” she added. “I clued in after my second feed, & switched from the boob to a bottle with saved milk.”
“I sobbed when it was time for bed- yes I was exhausted, but mostly because when she finally started feeling better around 10pm, I felt so terrible that I did that to my sweet girl. Wish us luck today, that I’ve pumped all the vegan out of these milk jugs,” the reality star who shared baby Ocean with fiancé Randall Emmett revealed.
Lala Kent is not alone here. According to the Mayo Clinic, certain foods and drinks “could cause your baby to become irritable or have an allergic reaction.”
“If your baby becomes fussy or develops a rash, diarrhea or wheezing soon after nursing, consult your baby’s doctor,” experts from the Mayo Clinic advise. “If you suspect that something in your diet might be affecting your baby, avoid the food or drink for up to a week to see if it makes a difference in your baby’s behavior. Avoiding certain foods, such as garlic, onions or cabbage, might help.”
Parents published an article about breastfeeding parents who adhere to vegan or vegetarian diets and found that as long as the parent is getting key nutrients, it’s perfectly safe for your baby. “Make sure to incorporate enough iron, calcium, vitamin B12, and zinc into your diet and [your baby] will be just fine,” their experts agreed. However, each mom and child is different!

Good to know, right? Kent has been very open about her breastfeeding journey. She often shares updates about her experience with her fans on social media.
“So many people asked me if I was going to breastfeed,” The Give Them Lala author wrote earlier this month. “I thought this was a strange question because it’s not that simple. I know many women who struggled- whether the baby didn’t latch, milk wasn’t coming in, or it just wasn’t for them. I was never married to the idea of breastfeeding because I didn’t want to feel disappointment or shame.”

“That being said,” she added, “I’m grateful my boobies are producing, but I know my baby is bonded to me regardless of what kind of nipple is in her mouth.”
Breastfeeding is different for each and every mom. As other celebrities like Chrissy Teigen and Hilary Duff have recently shared their own struggles with breastfeeding, we are happy to see Lala Kent joining them. By helping other moms understand that a one-size-fits-all approach is not applicable for most, they help to remove the pressure so many moms feel when experiencing difficulty breastfeeding.
