Macaulay Culkin never celebrated Father’s Day, then he became one

Macaulay Culkin is changing the way he celebrates Father’s Day.

In an emotional Instagram post, Culkin opened up about how Father’s Day changed for him after becoming a “papa” himself.

Culkin, who is estranged from his own father, Kit, admits now that he is a father of two, he no longer dreads Father’s Day.

“If you know a little about me then you’d know I’ve had a complicated relationship with Father’s Day in the past,” Culkin told his followers.

“But since becoming a papa myself I’ve decided to reinvent the wheel,” he continued, revealing that now his Father’s Day is about the little ones who gave him the title.

“Other than getting an hour or two of extra sleep, I try to make the day a celebration of my boys more than me. After all, they are the ones who made me a father (no offense to Brenda).”

Culkin admits that in their house Father’s Day is low on the list in terms of celebrated holidays. “In our house Father’s Day isn’t held in as a high regard as birthdays or Christmas but it does mop the floor of such holidays as St. Patrick’s day, Valentine’s Day, and the 4th of July.”

Nonetheless, Culkin says he now makes it a point to “try to do fun things for the boys on Father’s Day. It’s a special day.”

“All of this is a way to say thank you to LucasFilm for sending me a care package full of things that are more meant for my children to enjoy (with the exception of the hot sauce),” Culkin continued.

“Father’s Day isn’t for me, it’s for the people that make me feel like a father.”

Fans praised Culkin for “breaking the cycle.”

“You’re a cool dude for thinking like that. Hope you had a great day,” one person wrote.

“I love hearing the way you think. Thank you for posting your thoughts,” another commenter wrote. “I lost my Dad this year and it’s been heartbreaking. I’m dreading Father’s Day. I think this will help to change my perspective.”

“First Father’s Day for me coming up. Beautiful reminder that it’s not about me – it’s about the people allowing me the privilege of being a father. I love that perspective.”

Culkin and his wife, actress Brenda Song are parents to two boys.

Both Macaulay and his brother, fellow actor Kieran, have called their dad a “bad man” and “not a good person” in previous interviews.

Kieran has opened talked about how their mom raised seven children in “studio apartment all by herself. He told Page Six, “There was a guy there — he didn’t do anything.”
