Although short-lived, Mama June Shannon has made one of her first public appearances since being arrested in 2019 on drug possession charges. According to reports, found in the vehicle she was sharing with her then-boyfriend Geno, was a controlled substance and other drug paraphernalia.
As a result of her arrest, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson’s older sister, Pumpkin, filed for custody of her kid sister. Since then, the reality television star has lived with her older sister, brother-in-law, and niece as Mama June struggled to get clean.
Now, Mama June is saying she’s been clean for a year and a half. On November 3, fans were surprised when Honey Boo Boo and Mama June revealed themselves as wildcard contestants on Fox’s The Masked Singer.
While their first and only performance turned out to be their last, Mama June says the experience was still an emotional one for her. “Well, Alana I know would’ve hoped that it was just her on stage, and me too because I’m that backstage mom hyping her up. But it was a great experience,” Mama June told People.
“I realized the last time we were out there together doing a huge project, which was Dancing with the Stars, I was in my addiction,” the mom continued. “But during The Masked Singer, I had been clean for over a year and a half. So for me, it was an emotional experience, and I guess that’s why I teared up when we got on stage the night of the performance. Because I was actually doing something with her for the first time outside of everyday life, our show — a huge project in California — sober.”
Honey Boo Boo went on to call her time with her mom on the singing show “very fun,” adding that it was “just a good time altogether.” During their performance, the mother-daughter duo performed Miley Cyrus’ Party In the U.S.A.
Honey Boo Boo explained they picked that song because “I feel like it’s not a song you have to be able to sing, you could just scream that song at the top of your lungs, and you’re still going to have fun with it.” And while she admits she wishes her time on the show last a little bit longer, she wasn’t surprised considering “I can’t sing.”

Fans will be able to get more behind-the-scenes moments of their time on the singing show during the sixth season of Mama June: From Not to Hot, which airs this spring. Until then, it seems like the mother and daughter will go back to normal life, with one of Honey Boo Boo’s goals being to graduate high school.
