One of the most Iconic popstars in the last 30 years, Mariah Carey, has written a memoir titled, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. In fact, it’s one of the most highly anticipated memoirs to come out this year.
In the book, Carey dives into everything from her childhood, her relationship with her parents, her past romantic relationships, and her divorce with the father of her two children. And based on what is known about the contents of the book so far, the Grammy-winning singer did not hold back.
Mariah Carey on Her Relationship With Her Mom
In the memoir, according to People, Carey described her relationship with her mom as a “complicated journey” and something of a “rollercoaster.” Nonetheless, despite the ups and downs, it seems as though Carey still appreciates her mom, Pat, who she addressed in the dedication.
″And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
The Meaning of Mariah Carey
As Carey wrote, all she ever wanted was to make her mother proud. And that through it all still respects her as a performer and working mother. Sadly, however, Carey could never quite be “the light” she so desperately wanted to be for her mom.
″I loved her deeply, and, like most kids, I wanted her to be a safe place for me,” Carey said in the memoir, per People. “Above all, I desperately wanted to believe her.” However, as the singer continued, it would never be that easy.
″But ours is a story of betrayal and beauty. Of love and abandonment. Of sacrifice and survival. I’ve emancipated myself from bondage several times, but there is a cloud of sadness that I suspect will always hang over me, not simply because of my mother but because of our complicated journey together.”
Carey continued to say that becoming a mother herself to her twins, Moroccan and Monroe, was what helped her see who her mother was to her. According to the mom of two, her relationship with her mom had “caused me so much pain and confusion.”
But, “time has shown me there is no benefit in trying to protect people who never tried to protect me. Time and motherhood have finally given me the courage to honestly face who my mother has been to me.”
″Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions. Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.″
Following Patricia‘s divorce from Mariah’s father Alfred Roy, Pat became Mariah’s primary caregiver. She was only 3 years old at the time. In the book, Mariah talked about craving a mother like the ones she saw on the TV and described a time when she nearly drowned at the age of 7 and how the entire event went unnoticed by her mom.
From her grandmother’s disownment of her mom to vowing to never let the idea of starting a family keep her from her iconic career, Mariah Carey talks about it all. “It has taken me a lifetime to find the courage to confront the stark duality of my mother, the beauty and the beast that coexist in one person — and to discover there’s beauty in all of us, but who loved you and how they loved you will determine how long it takes to realize it.”
Mariah Carey Speaks On Divorce From Nick Cannon, With Who She Shares Her Two Children
Following eight years of marriage and two children, Carey and Nick Cannon ended their marriage. And while the divorce turned bitter, Carey said it didn’t have to be that way.
″Honestly, I think Nick and I could have worked it out between the two of us, but egos and emotions got inflamed (which can translate into many billable lawyer hours, and ultimately it did). It was tough. We both wanted to make sure everything was cool for our family. We will always be family, and we make it work.″
Carey said before Cannon, she never wanted to be a mother. But that all changed when she met the media mogul. ″Our desire to have children became a force of nature and why we got married so quickly,” she wrote, according to People.

In the end, it was the feeling of safety and the attention he constantly gave her that caused her to fall for Cannon. In the end, despite their divorce, the exes are now amicable and continue to work together while raising their children.
