Matthew McConaughey swears his hair is all-natural after losing it all in the early 90s.
In McConaughey’s memoir Greenlights, the actor, 52, reveals buzzing off all of his hair after he experienced significant hair loss twenty years ago.
“You can go back and look at things like The Wedding Planner and those things; I mean, you’ll see, I was losing,” the actor recalled in a recent interview with LADBible.
“I got a picture: Turn of the millennium party in 2000 in Jamaica, I was looking down laughing, and there was a baseball-sized bald spot on the top of my head,” he added.
After shaving his head, McConaughey began rubbing a topical ointment into his scalp “once a day for 10 minutes” in an effort to regrow his hair. And actually, a few years ago while on Live with Ryan and Kelly, he revealed the ointment was Regenix.
“I was fully committed to it,” he told the outlet. “No Propecia, no nothing. It was just manual labor.”
And while he is very happy with the results, McConaughey is just as shocked as the next person about just how amazing his hair is today.
“All I can tell you is it came back,” he said. “I have more hair now than I had in 1999.”
He also went on to share how others have attempted to take credit for his luscious, full head of hair. McConaughey said he learned from a Beverly Hills doctor how at an international hair transplant conference, a doctor alleged that he had given McConaughey hair plugs that accounted for his thicker head of hair.
“[The Beverly Hills doctor] goes, ‘Can I just look at your hair? Can I just feel it and see?’ ” he recalled. “I said, ‘Yeah man,’ and he goes ‘You don’t have transplants!’ I said, ‘That’s what I said, of course I don’t.’ “
McConaughey said the doctor replied with, ‘I can’t wait to bust this guy’s nut next year when he raises his hand.’ “
Said McConaughey of the surgeon: “He’s busted, man!”
