Family of Miya Marcano Claim Apartment Complex Negligent In Her Death

The family of slain college student, Miya Marcano, is seeking justice after learning new details about possible negligence on the part of the apartment complex where she lived.

“We believe that this apartment complex was negligent in a number of things that they did,” the family’s attorney, Daryl K. Washington said in a press conference with the family on Sunday.

The Prime Suspect in Miya Marcano’s Death Was a Maintenance Worker for the Apartment Complex.

The attorney also shared that the family intends on “holding those responsible accountable” for the death of Miya Marcano.

The investigation by Orange County detectives has identified a prime suspect in the college student’s death. Armando Caballero was a maintenance worker for the Arden Villas apartments where Marcano lived.

Investigators believe Caballero used his “master” key fob to enter the student’s first-floor apartment. The maintenance worker was found dead, from an apparent suicide, on September 27.

Marcano’s body was discovered in a wooded area in Orlando Saturday, NBC Miami reported.

The entity that owns the Arden Villas apartments issued a statement last week that spoke to their hiring practices. They said that all potential employees undergo criminal background checks, and no records of sexual assault or burglary were found for Caballero.

After the disappearance of Marcano, the management of the apartment complex said that a security guard had been hired, maintenance policy had been changed, and a full security review will be undertaken.

The attorney for the victim’s family also shared with the press that the Marcano family intends to start a foundation in their late daughter’s honor.

“So it’s just a number of things that this family want to do to make sure that Miya’s death is not in vain,” he explained.

“They also want to use this as an opportunity to change laws,” Washington also said. “One of those being the how they do background checks on maintenance directors.”

While this is a difficult time for all that knew Miya Marcano, at least the family is intent on helping to make sure a similar circumstance will not befall other young people.
