During the early morning hours of January 2, a 20-year-old woman and a 2-year-old boy, who is believed to be the woman’s son, were discovered on the ground outside of the apartment where they reportedly lived.

The toddler was identified as Johntavis Newell. According to police, Johntavis was thrown from the window of the 11th-floor apartment by his mom.

His mom also threw herself from the window after leaving her 7-month-old son, Ameer Newell, in a scalding tub. The baby also had lacerations to his head. Both Johntavis and Ammer succumbed to their injuries.

When authorities entered the apartment building, they also discovered the children’s great-grandfather. As the Chicago Sun-Times reports, the 70-year-old man suffered stab wounds and cuts to his face and body.

According to reports, the 20-year-old survived the alleged jump, as did the grandfather. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said both the mom and the grandfather are in critical condition. “They’re still sedated so we have not been able to interview them.”

However, police were able to talk to other family members, who said the 20-year-old had just moved out of the apartment where the alleged killings took place the week before. Those family members are obviously devasted by the tragedy that unfolded.

Another resident of the apartment building called the crime scene “insanity.” The man who identified himself as Rahin told KIRO 7 said, “I saw it. It was the first thing I saw when I woke up and it’s right around the corner. I come out here with the dogs at 4 o’clock and I couldn’t believe it.”
