After losing just about everything, pregnant Lastachia Pullen from Edmond, Oklahoma, turned to St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church for assistance when the unexpected happened.
“I had nothing,” Lastachia explained to KFOR. “Had a house and couldn’t afford it anymore, lost a job. I couldn’t work because I was pregnant. It was stressful,” she added.
It was then she began to look for a place to get help, which is how she discovered St. Augustine.
“This was the one place that was like, ‘OK, we’ll help you!'” she recalled.
She was at the church, filling out paperwork about a month ago, when the unexpected happened.
“When I came here, my water broke!” she added.
It was just Lastachia, her mother-in-law, and church employee Sarah-Emily Steinhardt.
And while some may have been shocked by the situation, Sarah-Emily, the church’s engagement coordinator thought it was “thrilling, and exciting, and humbling all at the same time.”
They then quickly rushed Lastachia to the hospital and the next day, she gave birth to her daughter, Cataleya.
Shortly after Cateleya’s birth, Lastachia still needed help getting supplies for her baby. Members of St. Augustine quickly did their part, donating diapers, strollers, car seats, and more to the mom.

“I can’t imagine being in that position where you’re literally in labor but due to circumstances beyond your control, you have nothing for that brand new baby,” Sarah-Emily remarked.
“If not for them, I wouldn’t have had nothing,” she said.
The community also purchased Christmas gifts for Lastachia’s two older kids and raised enough money to cover her utility and energy bills.
“I didn’t expect it and I’m very grateful,” she said.
