We at Mamas Uncut follow a lot of tattoo trends to keep up with the ever-changing world of tattooing. However, some tattoo designs remain constant. The most common tattoos are designs that you will see again and again and again on social media. Despite the ubiquity of many of the most common tattoos, people are still attracted to them, preferring to be in good company as opposed to traveling a path less traveled.
We reached out to some tattoo artists who post often on social media to get a better understanding of what common tattoos are actually being commissioned at alarming rates. Yes, tattoo artists are getting sick of tattooing some of these tired designs. Likely, you’ll never know, however, as most artists are happy to put the customer and their needs first. But, we’re not going to sugarcoat it for you, the most common tattoos are mostly cliché at this point. Let’s take a look and discuss further below where we will share examples with you.
Check Out the Most Common Tattoos in the United States Below!
Infinity Symbol Tattoos
The infinity symbol Is by far one of the most requested symbols and one of the most common tattoos you will come across again and again. Here are some basic ones which we assume are shared between a couple to symbolize their “forever love.”
Another thing people love to do is to shove stuff into their infinity symbols. Things like names are popular. But, in the example image above, you get a two-for-one in that the symbol contains a feather. We hate to break it to you but feather designs are some of the most common tattoos ever.
Small Heart Tattoos
Small hearts are some of the most common tattoos you will encounter today and that’s been true for decades. Some couples get them as symbols of their love and others just get the heart symbol as a way to share the love.
Instead of using the highly visual art of tattooing to show an actual place, folks have turned to just getting coordinates on their body. Yes, you’ll find that these degrees are some of the most common tattoos today.
Crescent Moon Tattoos
Here’s a pretty example of one of the most common tattoos, the crescent moon. To be fair, people tend to get more creative with objects from nature and thus these tend to not get too repetitive. However, we urge you to put some thought into your crescent moon tattoo as you’ll be in very good company.
If we never had to see another butterfly tattoo… Well, we’d be at a loss because it’s one of the most common tattoos people get today. As you can see in the above example, the artist has taken care to develop original shapes in the wings which helps this design stand out.
Bird Silhouette Tattoos
Okay. This. This right here!!! Who did this first? Why do we see it over and over and over and over again? For whatever reason, a dandelion being blown into bird silhouettes is one of the most overplayed images we’ve seen. Further, bird silhouettes of a flock of birds are also some of the most common tattoos today.
Roman Numeral Tattoos
Roman numerals are stately-looking. We get it. However, there are a whole lot of them tattooed on bodies right now. Numerals like these are some of the most common tattoos ever.
Lightning Bolt Tattoos
Everybody seems to be getting little lightning bolt tattoos on their body. You’ll find them on fingers, wrists, arms, and legs. Here’s one on the back of an ankle which looks sharp and clean. We don’t know why these designs have emerged as some of the most common tattoos today.
Apparently, every person who gets a tattoo has a bad sense of direction as compass tattoos are some of the most common tattoos right now. Sometimes it’s just a compass, like this one, and other times it’s worked into some scenic background.
Pocket Watch Tattoos
One of the most popular child tattoos for parents comes in the form of a pocket watch that is “set” to a baby’s time of birth. In the example above we find it for a little girl named Bella. Note: there are plenty of Roman numerals here as well.
Pet Paw Tattoos
People sure love their dogs! One of the most common tattoos among pet lovers are paw tattoos. Some just go with a generic paw print like the one above. Others will get their dog’s actual print tattooed.
Animal Print Tattoos
We see animal print often. Lately, the cheetah print has been singing the call of the wild for folks as it’s become one of the most common tattoos. Zebra, cow, and tiger prints are also popular.
Holding Hand Tattoos
The above tattoo and the one below are related. They are both “single line” tattoos that are drawn using one continuous line. This one shows holding hands which are some of the most common tattoos on their own but they are also in the single line style which has emerged in recent years as a massive trend.
Single Line Tattoos
Here’s another single line tattoo that depicts a face. A woman’s face drawn with a line is on so many arms today that it’s one of the most common tattoos. There are other ways to create a portrait tattoo, folks!
There’s nothing wrong with watercolor tattoos! In fact, we love them! What we do not love is the fact that three-quarters of all watercolor tattoos are of Disney characters. What is this about?
Mickey Mouse Tattoos
Here’s another of the most common tattoos, that of Mickey Mouse done with the watercolor effect. We see this far too often. There are other ways to show your love for one of the world’s largest mass media and entertainment conglomerates! You can do it! We believe in you!
People have gotten increasingly creative with their constellation tattoos which does make them some of the most common tattoos but artists are spicing these tired designs up by including objects from space, flowers, and other elements to connect the dots.
Again, there’s nothing wrong with a branch tattoo. In fact, we think they are perfect as “filler” in sleeve tattoos. Branches are some of the most common tattoos but the subject matter is so varied that they don’t get old for us.
“Not All Those Who Wander…”
“Not all those who wander are lost,” is not the only quote. There are more. We promise. However, these words are tattooed on tons of bodies today. It’s one of the most common tattoos that we could live without seeing more of. The spirit of the quote is to BE ADVENTUROUS. Try it and find something original for your own tattoo.
“Love You More” Tattoos
“Love you more,” is not the other quote we were talking about. It’s tired. Do better.
Maple Leaf Tattoos
Those infinity symbol tattoos are so common we managed to find a three-for-one again with these infinity tattoos that incorporate a maple leaf and a rose into them. Both of those plants made our list of the most common tattoos. These tattoos are basic to the second degree.
Tree designs in this circular shape are some of the most common tattoos. We’ve seen some artists get very creative to help improve on the basicness of them which we commend. However, you can depict a tree in a great many ways that an artist can help you explore!
Mountain Scene Tattoos
People really shoving a scenic mountain scene inside a diamond shape. They can’t help themselves and thus, have made them some of the most common tattoos today. If you scroll back up to the “Branch tattoo” example and look closely you will see a tattoo that’s similar to this one as well. Again, you can do things your own way.

We can’t knock the rose tattoo as it has been one of the most common tattoos for hundreds of years now. From traditional American designs to more contemporary imaginings, there is no shortage of rose tattoos covering bodies.
There you go! We hope you found the most common tattoos illuminating and urge you to get creative with a tattoo artist to come up with more original body art. After all, you don’t want to have just another infinity symbol, feather, or the like. Spice things up and take a risk with your design to creatively express yourself to the fullest! Happy tattooing!
