NeNe Leakes Provides an Update on 23-Year-Old Son, Brentt, Who Suffered a Stroke Two Weeks Ago

A few days ago, TMZ reported that NeNe Leakes son, Brentt, suffered a stroke and was hospitalized before beginning his rehab at home with his mother. In light of the TMZ report, Leakes took to her Instagram story to provide an update and avoid false information getting out.

The former Real Housewives of Atlanta star noted that her son is just 23 years young, meaning things like this don’t just happen out of the blue. And while doctors had several theories as to what might’ve caused the stroke, recent tests haven’t pointed them in the right direction.

“The first thing a lot of doctors think of when someone that age come in with that kind of condition is maybe they have done drugs or maybe they have some serious infection, maybe HIV or some sort of infection is what I’m being told by the doctors,” said Leakes on Instagram.

The only problem is her son doesn’t drink or do drugs, and has already been tested for HIV – which came back negative. Their next thought was maybe Brentt caught COVID-19, since some studies suggest an increased risk of stroke in COVID patients with pre-existing heart conditions.

Again, they were at a dead end – not only did Brentt deny ever knowing he had COVID-19, but NeNe Leakes confirmed she never knew him to be infected with it. While doctors continue to try and identify the cause of the stroke, the 23-year-old continues to rehab and recover at home.

“It was very scary. I don’t even want to go into details of what happened and how I found out and what condition he was in,” the reality star added. “Obviously, a stroke is a very serious thing, and so he’s struggling with speaking. I don’t know. I just know, keep us in your prayers.”

According to the CDC, strokes occur when brain cells aren’t given an adequate amount of oxygen, usually due to a blood vessel bursting, which restricts blood supply to the brain. Within minutes, the brain cells start to die, resulting in brain damage, disability, or even worse – death.

The news of NeNe Leakes’ son is just the latest tragedy to hit her family in the past year. On September 1, 2021, her husband Gregg Leakes passed away after a three-year battle with colon cancer. He was diagnosed in 2018 and was cancer-free in 2019, but it returned in 2021.

The couple originally married in 1997 and while they divorced in 2011, they reconciled in 2013 and have been married ever since. In the five days leading up to his death, her husband was surrounded by loving family and friends – adding that his last days on Earth were ‘beautiful.’

“The last five days before his passing was really beautiful,” she said after he passed. “All of his children were there. His best friends were there. Our closest friends were there. We all sat with him around the clock.” Unfortunately, the news of her son is starting to become a bit too much.

She noted the club her and Gregg opened together, called Linnethia Lounge. When Gregg passed away, owning the club was something she and Brentt shared. Now with the news of her son, she said she might have to consider selling the club – “This is just a lot right now on me.”

As for Brentt, he remains in good spirits and will continue his recovery while doctors determine what the problem was. “If we knew the cause they would treat the cause,” she added. For now, we’re going to keep Brentt in our prayers and wish him a speedy and successful recovery.
