NYC Health Department Releases Latest Batch of Top Baby Names

New York City’s Health Department recently published its year-end analysis of baby names given to newborns in the city in 2022. It’s a great snapshot of naming trends, and you can expect American parents from around the country to use many of the same names. The Social Security Administration (SSA) releases its data much later in the year, so this report from NYC is the best preview, with the largest sample size, of the names American parents chose last year.

Without spoiling anything, many of the top names from 2021 remained popular in 2022. The top name for girls and boys stayed the same, so we’re not seeing much movement as far as uber-popular appellations are concerned. Below, we will count down the names of girls and boys that ranked in the top ten. Then, we will pick apart the data to share even more information about how New Yorkers are naming their little ones these days.

Most Popular Baby Names for Girls in New York City

10. Sofia

Over 50,000 baby girls were born in New York City in 2022. The tenth most popular name among them was Sofia. Sofia is a name of Greek origin and means “wisdom.” The latest SSA data (from 2021) ranks Sofia as the 18th most popular name in the US.

9. Luna

In ninth place, Luna is a name of Latin origin and means “moon.” It’s more popular in NYC than elsewhere but the name still ranks as the eleventh most chosen name for girls across the US.

8. Amelia

Amelia is a name of Germanic origin and means “universal” or “industrious.” It was the eighth most given name in NYC, but it’s more popular elsewhere. More broadly the name ranked in fourth place.

7. Isabella

Isabella is a Latinate form of Elizabeth, and it’s commonly found in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese naming traditions. The Hebrew root of the name means “pledged to God.” Isabella was the seventh most given name in NYC and the seventh nationwide.

6. Ava

In sixth place, Ava is a multicultural name found in Hebrew, Latin, and Germanic naming traditions. This means the name has multiple potential meanings: “life,” “bird,” and “island.” It ranks similarly across the US, where it is the fifth most chosen name for girls.

5. Leah

Here’s a baby name that’s exceedingly more popular in NYC than the rest of the country. In the city, the name ranked as the fifth most given to girls. Across America, the name ranked 46th. That’s a huge difference! Leah is an appellation of Hebrew origin, meaning “weary.”

4. Sophia

If we were to combine the spellings Sophia and Sofia, it would become the most popular name in NYC and the US, but that’s not how NYC’s Health Department or the SSA does things. The Sophia spelling is more popular than Sofia in the US and NYC. Sophia is also of Greek origin, meaning “wisdom.”

3. Mia

Mia is an Italian name meaning “mine.” It’s also a name of Scandinavian origin, a form of Mary, with a Hebrew root that means “bitter.” Mia is the eighth most popular name in the US and the third in NYC.

2. Olivia

Ranking as the second most-given name for girls in NYC, Olivia is a wildly popular choice. Across the US, Olivia is the number one choice. Olivia is a name of Latin origin, meaning “olive tree.”

1. Emma

Ranking second in the US and first in NYC is Emma. This classic name originated in German and means “universal.” It’s clear that its appeal is also universal. Emma was also the most popular name in NYC in 2021 and has been since 2017.

10. Benjamin

Benjamin is a name of Hebrew origin, meaning “son of the right hand.” It was the tenth most given name in NYC and the seventh across the US.

Aiden is far more popular in NYC than it is more broadly across the US. It ranked ninth in the city and 26th across the country. That’s a glaring difference! Aiden is a unisex name of Irish origin that means “little fiery one.” It goes to far more boys than girls today.

8. Daniel

Daniel was the eighth most chosen name in NYC in 2022. It’s more popular in the city than across the US, where it ranks sixteenth. Daniel is a name of Hebrew origin, meaning “God is my judge.”

7. David

We’ve got another big difference with the name David. Across the US, it ranks as the 30th most given baby name. In NYC, it’s firmly in the top ten in the seventh spot. David is a name of Hebrew origin, meaning “beloved.” It’s certainly one of the city’s most beloved options.

6. Joseph

Joseph is a baby name of Hebrew origin, meaning “Jehovah increases.” Again, we find a name that’s far more popular in NYC than elsewhere. Joseph ranks as the sixth most commonly given in the city and the 28th across the US.

5. Jacob

Jacob is a baby name of Hebrew origin, related to James, meaning “supplanter.” Across the US, Jacob ranks twenty-fourth, but in NYC, it’s fifth!

4. Lucas

Finally, a name that’s similar in popularity in NYC and beyond. Lucas is the fourth most chosen baby name in NYC and the eighth across the country. Lucas is the Latin form of the name Luke and means “from Lucania.”

3. Ethan

You will find the baby name Ethan is a good bit more favored in NYC than in the US. In the city, the name ranks as third, but elsewhere it’s in the twentieth spot. Ethan is a name of Hebrew origin, meaning “strength.” It’s certainly going strong in the Big Apple.

2. Noah

We’ve got some consensus on the name Noah where it is second both in NYC and across the US. Noah is a name of Hebrew origin, meaning “rest.”

1. Liam

Liam is the number one name in the US and NYC. It is an Irish diminutive form of William, originating in German, meaning “steadfast protector.” Liam has been the number one name in NYC since 2016!

Analyzing the Data: Name Trends for Girls

Out of the top ten girls’ names from last year, eight of them remained on the top ten list for 2022. Sarah and Chloe dropped off the top ten list, and Luna and Sofia were added. Olivia cruised up two spots into second, and Isabella dropped two spots into seventh.

Name Trends for Boys

Nine out of ten baby names are the same this year and last. Benjamin superseded Alexander on this year’s list and moved into the tenth spot. Liam and Noah stayed in the top two spots from last year, while Ethan rose one into third place.

Nature-inspired names are also on the rise, with the following baby names improving their positions: Grace (No. 26), Angel (No. 51), Harper (No. 61), Melody (No. 64), Serenity (No. 70), Angelina (No. 88), and Faith (No. 97).

Logan has become one of those “cool kid” baby names like Carter and Jackson. While historically Logan has been all over the place in terms of popularity, it has gained ground as a popular name once again and doesn’t look to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Jayden is a new baby name that does not surface meaningfully until the late 1900s and is believed to be . The name rapidly grows in popularity after Will Smith and Jada Pinkett name their son Jadon, after his mother. Jayden is a contemporary spelling of Jaden.

If you love this name but are having a girl, Jade makes a great, close alternative.

Elijah comes from Hebrew for “the Lord is my God.” Elijah is an Old Testament prophet and miracle worker who lived in Northern Israel. The world recently lost one of its most impactful Elijah’s with the passing of Elijah Cummings the beloved U.S. congressman from Maryland and civil rights activist. Elijah Wood remains one of our favorite Elijahs and will always be best known as ‘Frodo” from Lord of the Rings fame.

And “Eli” is such a cute, easy nickname.

James is the English version of Jacob, which is a Hebrew baby name meaning “to follow behind” or to “supplant”. James also happens to be one of the most popular boy’s names of all time in every English speaking country and comes in variations in over 40 languages. We all know a good James but our favorites are actors James Dean, James Mc Avoy, James Franco and Jim Carrey. We also love musicians Jimi Hendrix, James Taylor and Jim Morrison.. but no one embodies the sheer swagger of the name James than “Bond, James Bond” no matter who plays him!

Alexander comes from Greek meaning “defending men” and has been popular in the U.S. since the 1990s. A classic “evergreen” baby name, coming from Hebrew. It means ‘who is like God’, which as we all know is a rhetorical questions. Michael has always stood the test of time to steadfastly remain as a top boys’ name in Western Europe and English speaking countries.

There are too many famous Michaels and Mikes to count, but here are a few: Michael Jackson – the ‘King of Pop’, Michael Douglas, Michael Keaton, Michael J. Originating from Hebrew, Ethan means “Strong”, “Long lived and “firm” It’s been a mega-popular name for boys in English speaking countries and Western Europe since the early 2000s. 

Famous Ethans include Ethan Allen an American Revolutionary General, Ethan Hawke, one of our favorite Gen X hotties, Ethan Hunt (AKA Tom Cruise), who always saves the world in ‘Mission Impossible’ movies and actor Ethan Embry.

Our list of favorite Williams is long and distinguished! There’s Prince William, of course. You may have heard of him. But William Shatner who we all knows as Capt. James T Kirk. Who can forget William Wallace in Braveheart? Or outlaw Billy the Kid? All sorts of musicians are named William too! They cover every genre from country to rap – Willie Nelson, Billie Corgan, and Will.I.Am are some that come to mind.

Mason was a straight-forward English surname or occupational name meaning “stoneworker.” Today, the baby name is a hit among parents in English speaking including celebs. Kourtney Kardashian has a son with the name.
