Phoebe Bridgers isn’t taking kindly to those who claim to be her fans on social media, yet choose to bully her when she steps out in public. In fact, she called out those particular fans in a recent interview with Them, where she recalled an incident that occurred earlier this year while walking through an airport.
Bridgers was seen at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with comedian Bo Burnham just a few weeks after her father, Tony, passed away. She announced her death a week prior and was in town to attend her father’s funeral. Apparently, some of her so-called-fans weren’t treating her well at the airport.
The incident also came weeks after her rumored split from former fiance Paul Mescal – who she dated for roughly two years. Not long after the split, she was spotted cuddling and making out with her new love interest, Bo Burnham – which allegedly had something to do with her being mistreated at the airport.
“I’m coming from a place of literally — I’m feeling it in my body as I’m saying, but — people with my picture as their Twitter picture, who claim to like my music, f***ing bullied me at the airport on the way to my father’s funeral this year,” she said in her interview with Them – joined by her Boygenius bandmates.
She condemned those that feel it necessary and think it’s okay to treat people like that, adding she hates whatever it is that gave them that right. “I, at one of the lowest points of my life, saw people who claim to love me f—ing dehumanize me and shame me and f***ing bully me on the way to my dad’s wake.”
Phoebe Bridgers even went as far as telling those ‘fans’ to ‘grow the f**k up,’ while also praising her bandmates – Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. She leans on Dacus and Baker during times like this and feels she can confide in them when needed – adding this was one of those times when it was needed.
“My two best friends are helping me with the boundary of ‘I don’t have to sit here and be fucking grateful that that happened’ and that that’s a part of my job. It doesn’t have to be, and it wasn’t five years ago, so I appreciate being able to look at two other people and be like, this is dehumanizing abuse, horrible s**t.”
Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker Release Debut Studio Album
Boygenius’ interview with Them, which was published on March 29, came just two days before the band released their debut studio album, the record, on March 31, 2023. The band, which features Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, released their first EP, Boygenius, on October 26, 2018.
The record was initially announced on January 18, when they also released the album’s first three singles – “$20”, “Emily I’m Sorry”, and “True Blue.” They released a fourth single, “Not Strong Enough,” on March 1. It’s one of the most highly-anticipated albums right now, helping fans walk into April with a big splash.
Even more exciting is that the band is coupling the album with two tours – the ‘Re:SET Concert Series’ and ‘The Tour.’ The former contains 12 shows between June 2 and June 25, while the latter has 14 shows between April 12 and August 5.
