The 1990s are back, and they aren’t going away anytime soon.
Let’s take a brief trip back in time. The year is 1999. Exactly 20 years ago. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera had just burst onto the music scene. The Matrix hit theaters and melted minds across the globe. Friends was at the peak of its popularity during its initial network run. The look du jour involved basically anything with low-rise jeans and a crop top.
With trends tending to be circular, it should come as no surprise that what was popular in 1999 is now popular again in 2019. Millennials have already lived through various ’70s and ’80s revivals, but the ’90s are now far enough in the past that even that decade is having another moment.
’90s fashion is back on the runway, ’90s-sounding music is a constant on radio, and everyone was very excited about the 20th anniversary of 10 Things I Hate About You a few weeks ago. Thus, the ’90s are back, and, honestly, we aren’t complaining.
The Social Security Administration keeps a database of the most popular U.S. baby names going all the way back to 1880. (Hey, want to know what was popular 100 years ago in 1919?) We looked up the most popular baby names from 1999, and this is what we found.
