Prince Harry has been a headline-making machine the past few days, following the release of his newest memoir titled Spare. In the book, he talks about his childhood, growing up in the Royal Family, and his relationship – or lack of relationship – with his brother, Prince William. It was a bombshell of a book.
One of the more headline-worthy moments in the book was when Harry described a physical altercation he got into with his brother. The two got into an argument about his wife, Meghan Markle, at Nottingham Cottage, where Harry was living at the time when William pushed him to the ground in the kitchen.
“He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out,” wrote Prince Harry in the memoir, which was released on January 10.
Prince Harry recently spoke about that experience during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert – who asked him about the importance behind the necklace William broke during the incident. It’s the same necklace he wore to the show and the same one he wore on the cover of his book.
“I’ve got my kids’ heartbeats, which my wife gave me,” said Harry, referring to two pendants on the necklace that contain cardiograms of his children – 3-year-old son Archie and 19-month-old daughter Lilibet. There’s also a pendant with a tiger’s eye on it, which his friend from Botswana made for him.
The interview with Colbert lasts nearly 40 minutes and it contains a little bit of everything – there was even a moment where Prince Harry took a shot of tequila with the host. Still, fans that went to the Tuesday taping of the show left disappointed after learning it wasn’t going to be a live interview.
Instead, fans eagerly packed the studio just to find out they were watching a pre-taped interview – which Colbert blamed on ‘security reasons.’ No further explanation was given and it rubbed most of the audience members the wrong way as they left angry, disappointed, and done with Harry’s drama.
Prince Harry Also Opens Up About His Late Mother, Princess Diana
Harry also talked about his mother, Princess Diana – who passed away from injuries sustained in a car crash in August 1997. Colbert asked Harry if his relationship with William would’ve gotten to the point it is today if his mother hadn’t died – to which Harry believes there is ‘no way’ it would be as bad as it is today.
“I’ve really felt the presence of my mom, especially in the last couple of years. And I detail in the book my brother and I talking at her grave and how he felt as though she had been with him for a long period of time and helped set him up with life and that he felt she was now moving over to me,” Harry added.
He went on to explain how he was 36 years old when he and Meghan stepped away from their Royal duties – citing a ‘need to carve out something different.’ It was the same age his mother was when she passed away, which Harry describes as an ‘interesting overlap of time’ in his interview with Colbert.
