Tattoos are a way to celebrate counterculture and the art of the sublime. Trippy tattoos have long been and will long be a popular genre of tattoos as these designs appeal to adventurous sensibilities and artistic interpretation. We decided to take a little trip into the world of psychedelic tattoos to discover what trends and creative designs are currently making waves.
We must admit, we were impressed by the variety, complexity, and artistry on display with these tattoos. Some common themes are full-color designs that often include an entire rainbow of colored ink. We also discovered that while tattoos of things like mushrooms are out there, most people go more personal and choose a subject matter that holds particular value to them. This fact contributes to the diverse array of psychedelic tattoos. Check out these 25 psychedelic tattoos that showcase a weird and fantastic aesthetic.
As promised, we did come across several mushroom tattoos and the like. However, we felt the need to share this one with you to get a taste of what creativity artists are adding to them. Here, these mushrooms look almost like coral or sea creatures. The pink and blue colors completely captivate.
This skull has swirling pink and purple shapes aplenty on top of an equally swimming background of contrasting green and yellow. The overall shape of the tattoo design gives movement as it is stretched and pulled in places as if by some sort of signal interference.
This cute and colorful ape is complete with a third eye with a bolt of electricity shooting from it. There’s an interesting line pattern on the monkey’s face that looks like a topographic map. We love the peach-colored ink that’s used in this design as a highlight for several shapes.
Spread Your Wings
Here, we find a butterfly that seems to be dotted with cheetah spots. There is a lovely ombre effect on display that begins as warm colors near the center and cools as your eyes moves to the periphery. Very sharp!
This dynamic tattoo borrows some shape and design influence from Art Deco and cranks the abstract to the max. While this is clearly a flamingo, the circumstances we find the bird is not immediately clear. Is it being sucked into a vortex or merely standing in water? Is it alien with multiple moons surrounding it?
‘Eruption of Love’
The tattoo artist who shared this volcanic tattoo captioned the image, “eruption of love.” We are into that! The arms coming through the eyes here is slightly unsettling, but overall, this is a very interesting and fun design.
This floral alligator is imagined in blue and pink in front of fern fronds that transform into the same colors. The use of color here is really striking and makes for a stunning, psychedelic tattoo.
If you love pastels, you could do no better than this design which capitalizes on color. A face with black, flowing tears is embedded in the castle as if it is some sort of ghost. We absolutely love this playful, pastel dream.
Melt Your Face
A melting smiley face between two aqua-colored skeletal hands with mushrooms sprouting from them is a delight with the absence of black ink. The design looks as if it’s temporary or floating on air.
We find John Lennon here that also seems to be a melting totem pole. While most people with psychedelic tattoos go for more abstract concepts and designs, this was one of the few we found with a recognizable pop culture figure as subject matter.
We love this confetti or polkadot effect that makes the tattoo sparkle with visual appeal. Distinctly colored flames and a rainbow make this design most unique.
This weird moth is one of the few psychedelic tattoos we found to only use black ink. We find it applied in the shape of an abstract moth that’s filled with tiny dots to help bring shape and shade to the overall tattoo.
“Imagination Vacation: The Grand Finale,” the artist who shared this design wrote. We find celestial shapes in the form of moons and constellations coupled with vibrant waves of color that vibrate throughout.
The person who shared this tattoo described it as a haunted house in a dessert for someone who loves all things creepy and who also grew up in Arizona. Okay! We find the ghost floating on top to be exceptionally cute.
This playful tattoo borders on optical illusion as it features the exact same tattoo done twice, in different colors, and slightly askew. The joke here is that it’s truly hard to keep your eyes focused as you look at the design.
“Cosmic Confetti Spider,” the artist who shared this rainbow-colored design wrote. The glowing red eye on the back of this eight-legged monster stays with you.
There’s actually not a man in the moon, instead, it’s a woman with excellent makeup. We adore the pink and orange clouds that are highlighted by a sharp yellow.
The artist who shared this design described it as a “dimension traveler.” We found a contrast in the sharp, blocky shapes and the organic-looking, wood-like grain.
“Psychedelic [Spiky] Boi,” the artist who shared this tattoo captioned it. We love this very strange, monolithic cactus with its watchful eye. Fans of surrealism, eat your hear out.
Here, we find stair leading to a gateway that’s full of color and possibility. The contrast between colorful ink and matte black is striking.
What’s On Your Mind?
A rainbow-colored hand holding a deconstructed human skull with a mushroom growing from it might be one of the strangest tattoos on this list of weird ones. We have no idea what’s going on here but we’re into it.
Scoot That Boot
We have heard of shoe planters before, but never seen one quite like this. We find a radical boot that washed in color containing eye-flowers that are partially shaded in blue. Be bold, do you.
We have seen a lot of melting objects on this psychedelic tattoo journey, but this one looks distinct with its sharp neat lines and bold colors. We love the way the color has been designed to turn cool and blue after it passes through the fingers.
An eye with a heart shaped iris and pupil dazzles with a frame of thick black ink that bleeds out. This is both a glamorous and remarkable design that feels so fresh and new.

This strange, devilish creature has three mouths, two if which are where the eyes should be while an eye sits in the middle of the forehead. Orange and purple give the skin a creepy look when contrasted with the blue and green of the eyelids and horns. It’s funky and we love it!
