When Rainn Wilson isn’t making others laugh, he’s encouraging others to open their eyes about climate change and the undesirable impact it’s having on planet Earth. That’s why we weren’t surprised when he announced on Twitter that he changed his name to Rainnfall Heat Wave Rising Sea Levels Wilson.
Alright, he didn’t legally change his name, but that’s not the point. In a video he posted on Twitter, Wilson explained his decision and welcomed others to join him in ‘changing’ their name. It’s a movement spearheaded by Arctic Basecamp, a team of scientists spreading awareness about climate change.
Wilson shared a website that allows you to input your name in exchange for a new name – like Rainnfall Heat Wave Rising Sea Levels Wilson – that you can then share on social media. It’s a harmless movement, but one that bears a lot of weight as climate change continues to devastate the entire world.
So, what’s the whole point of this new movement? According to Rainn Wilson, he hopes it will spark a little fire among decision makers at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as the COP27. The conference began on November 6th and runs through November 18th in Egypt.
With nearly 100 heads of state and 35,000+ representatives or delegates in attendance, the conference is an excellent opportunity for countries around the world to join hands in one of the biggest issues facing the world today – climate change. The hope is to see real progress, no matter how small or large it is.
“The Arctic is melting at Millions of Liters per second, yet this problem can’t seem to make a name for itself, so we’ll make a name for it,” said Rainn Wilson on Twitter. He posted a two-minute video urging his followers to ‘create a name that will bring attention to this problem’ and display it all over social media.
“And if enough of us do this, then maybe @cop27_egypt will be where our world leaders sit up and notice Arctic risks and introduce a solution… Make Arctic Name Changer a Game Changer!,” Wilson continued. He added that he’s unable to change his name on Twitter because of new CEO Elon Musk.
Jeff Bezos One-Ups Rainn Wilson With Announcement of His Own
Speaking of wealthy people, Jeff Bezos made quite the intriguing announcement on Tuesday. While Elon Musk is trying to change the world of social media, Bezos has vowed to give away a majority of his $124 billion fortune over his lifetime – most of which will go towards solutions to reduce climate change.
According to Forbes, Bezos is currently the fourth-richest person in the world – behind only Gautam Adani, Bernard Arnault (and family), and Elon Musk. His announcement comes as quite a surprise, as this is the first time he’s revealing such plans – many people weren’t sure if he would make the pledge.
It’s something that many of the world’s wealthiest people have pledged to – known as the Giving Pledge. It’s an open invitation for billionaires to join hands in vowing to give away a majority of their wealth to charity over their lifetime. It started with 40 of America’s wealthiest people and continues to grow stronger.

While Bezos isn’t listed on the Giving Pledge’s website and it’s unclear if he will formally join the others, he’s now the sixth person to make the pledge this year. The others, according to their website, include Sam Bankman Fried, Mala Gaonkar, Mark Pincus, Simone and Urs Wietlisbach, and Anne Wojcicki.
