Three days after a Georgia couple who dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus for an outdoor photo session discovered they had tested positive for the coronavirus.
According to Robert D. Parker, the chairman of the Long County board of commissioners, the event was part of an annual Christmas parade and tree-lighting ceremony in Ludowici, GA.
The couple wore masks during the event at a local pavilion but many of the children who posed for photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus did not have face coverings, including Mr. Parker’s two children, according to Mr. Parker.
Mr. Parker said that his children had not sat on Santa’s lap.
Mr. Parker said that the couple, who are county residents whose names have not been made public, developed symptoms of Covid-19 after the event and were tested on Saturday.
The couple then notified county officials on Sunday that they had tested positive for the virus.
“They’re good folks,” Mr. Parker said. “They would never knowingly put anybody in danger.”
The event was organized by the Long County Chamber of Commerce.
Some of the children who attended the event went to school on Friday prior to the couple being tested for the virus.
In addition, the county had not recommended testing for the children who might have been exposed.
Mr. Parker said that his children had not shown any symptoms.
And since the county revealed how Santa along with Mrs. Claus had contracted the virus, Mr. Parker said he has been faced with backlash.
“I have had hate mail nationwide,” he said.
“They’re all from out of state. The local outrage has been minimal.”
