Sara Cunningham founded Free Mom Hugs, a non-profit run by “Moms who love & affirm LGBTQIA+ kids fully. We educate family, faith and civic leaders, and advocate towards equality.”
The founder of Free Mom Hugs, supporting the LGBTQ community, has received a huge response. She shares that countless couples have requested her services.
She has also witnessed other women and men stepping up to serve as surrogate parents for same-sex couples.
“The ripple effect has just been astounding. It really touched a chord with a lot of people.”
Sara, who comes from a religious upbringing, initially struggled to accept her son Parker when he came out as gay.
“I’d absorbed these ideas that homosexuality was condemned by God,” she says. “I was worried about my son’s eternal damnation. He came out of his closet, and I went into mine. I went into a deep depression.”
After attending a Pride parade, Sara connected with others whose parents had shunned them for being gay. Driven by compassion and love for her son, she soon launched her non-profit and began officiating same-sex weddings.
