‘Saturday Night Live’ Returns After 6-Month Hiatus With a Cold Open About Israel-Hamas War by Pete Davidson

‘Saturday Night Live’ is back! The beloved comedy skit show made its return on October 14 with the premiere of its 49th season and it comes just a few weeks after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) ended their strike over a labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

They kicked the new season off with Pete Davidson as host and Ice Spice as the musical guest. It was a long time coming for Davidson, who was originally slated to host the Season 48 finale on May 6 before the writer’s strike (which began on May 2) put an end to those plans. Five months later and here we are.

While they normally start the show with a cold open comedy sketch, this episode was different. Instead of their typical cold open, Pete Davidson and the Saturday Night Live crew used it as an opportunity to address the recent tragedies in the Israel-Hamas war – which killed more than 200 Palestinians and more than 10 Israelis.

“This week, we saw the horrible images and stories from Israel and Gaza. And, I know what you’re thinking, who better to comment on it than Pete Davidson?” he said to begin the cold open – arguing that he is, in many ways, a ‘good person to talk about it’ because he lost his father in the 9/11 terrorist attack.

His father, Scott Davidson, was a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). He was working for Ladder Company 118 when two planes crashed into the World Trade Center. He was last seen running up the stairs of the second tower just minutes before it collapsed. He was confirmed dead.

“I saw so many terrible pictures this week of children suffering – Israeli children and Palestinian children – and it took me back to a really horrible, horrible place. No one in this world deserves to suffer, especially not kids,” Davidson said – adding that ‘sometimes comedy is really the only way forward from tragedy.’

He goes on to talk about all the things his mother used to do to cheer him up after his father passed away and vowed to ‘do what I’ve always done in the face of tragedy and that’s try to be funny’ for the millions of people out there who need a laugh. “And live from New York, it’s Saturday Night,” he said in conclusion.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift Make Surprise Appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live’

When the cold open came to an end, the show began and it was the ‘Saturday Night Live’ we’ve all grown to love over the past 48 seasons. They were quick with their jokes and had the crowd laughing for 90 minutes straight – of course, there were two people, in particular, who stole the show with their cameos.

Those two people were Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift – the hottest couple in the world right now. Swift made her presence known by introducing the crowd to Ice Spice before her second performance of the night, while Kelce was in a Fox NFL Sunday sketch about the NFL’s coverage of their dating rumors.

While neither Kelce or Swift have publicly confirmed (or denied) their relationship, it has become quite clear that they’re (at the very least) testing the waters. Not only has she been to several of his games in the past few weeks (sitting next to his mother, nonetheless), but they were recently seen holding hands.

That’s right, a new report by TMZ says they were recently seen holding hands in New York City on Saturday during what appeared to be a date night. They were also seen cuddling at their table and Travis was a gentleman the entire night – even helping her put her coat on at the end of the night.
