Simon Cowell Talks About 9-Year-Old Son’s Desire to Play Drums: “I Think He Wants to Be in a Rock Band”

Simon Cowell has enjoyed a legendary career in the music industry, but has done so behind the scenes as a record executive. He’s the founder and CEO of Syco Entertainment, which has helped discover and popularize a variety of talent – including Fifth Harmony, Labrinth, One Direction, Leona Lewis, and more.

Of course, he has also created some of the world’s biggest talent competitions, including Britain’s Got Talent, America’s Got Talent, American Idol, and The X Factor (UK and US). With that being said, his greatest creation – his 9-year-old son, Eric – hasn’t quite taken to the stage just yet (keyword, YET).

While Cowell has made a career out of working behind the scenes, his son has a different dream – he wants to be in the spotlight. According to his father, Eric has been honing his drumming and singing skills with the hopes of being in a rock band someday and even has a dream of auditioning in front of his father!

“He’s now decided he’s going to audition for Britain’s Got Talent. I think he wants to be in a rock band. He loves Green Day,” Simon Cowell said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday (August 29).

He had just finished the second night of the qualifier rounds for America’s Got Talent, but he wasn’t alone.

“Well, it’s brilliant because [Eric’s] to my left, so I always look over, and, you know the really crazy act tonight, who was like swallowing swords? [Well] he’s jumping up and down in his seat literally and he’s making me laugh so much,” Simon Cowell added in his interview – making his job as a judge very easy.

While he admits his son is a ‘great barometer’ for talent – just like his father – those days of having his son to his left might be limited because his son appears to be very serious about auditioning for BGT. Of course, Cowell is just trying to prepare himself for the torture his son will put him through with the drums.

“That’s going to be total torture. I mean, of all the things I’ve ever done, this will probably be the hardest, because he does play drums. [He’s] going to drum and sing! I went, ‘Oh God, no,'” Cowell joked to ET. We all know how obnoxious it is to have a drummer in the house, but Cowell will soon be living in it.

Simon Cowell Will Continue to Be a Proud and Supportive Father

Simon Cowell has always told his son that it’s best to stay ‘on this side of the camera’ – referring to the behind-the-scenes work his father does – but that doesn’t seem to be Eric’s modus operandi. And while it doesn’t quite make sense why his son wants to be in the spotlight so bad, he’ll support him regardless.

“I don’t know what it is, maybe because all these kids are auditioning and now he wants to be up there with his friends,” Cowell said in the interview before being asked if it’ll be tougher for his son when/if he decides to audition for Britain’s Got Talent, given who his father is and what his father means to the show.

“I don’t think so, no. I think that if you’ve got, like myself, I have a very open mind…Like I said tonight, everything is subjective, we all like different things and he’s got his own opinion on things and he’s got his own mind and I’ve always encouraged that with him,” he said, encouraging his son to follow his own path.
