Tory Lanez Will Spend the Next 10 Years in Prison for Shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020

Daystar Peterson is finally learning his fate. The 31-year-old hip-hop artist, who most of us know as Tory Lanez, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday (August 8) for a crime he committed in July 2020 – he was accused of and found guilty of assaulting fellow artist, Megan Thee Stallion, after a party.

The decision, which came at the hands of Judge David Herriford at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, came roughly eight months after Lanez was found guilty of all three charges brought against him in 2020 – including assault with a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm and negligent discharge of a gun.

His trial, which started on December 12 and lasted nine days, saw both Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez take the stand to defend themselves. The prosecution was seeking a hefty sentence for his actions before, during, and after the incident, while the defense was seeking leniency in lieu of rehabilitation.

Since Tory Lanez has been held in the Los Angeles County Jail since his conviction in December, he’s being credited with 10 months off his sentence for time already served. He’ll spend the next 9 years, 2 months behind bars, which is far less than the 22 years that the prosecution was originally asking for.

“Sometimes good people do bad things,” Herriford said of the sentencing – citing a strong difference between the Lanez described as a doting father and charitable individual with the Lanez that carelessly fired a gun at Megan Thee Stallion. “Actions have consequences, and there are no winners in this case.”

Tory Lanez, who appeared ‘stoic’ in court on Tuesday, spoke to the jury on Tuesday before his sentence was revealed. He described the victim as his ‘friend’ and someone he ‘still care[s] for to this day’ – admitting that what he did that night was wrong and that he’s willing to take ‘full responsibility’ for it.

His father, Sonstar Peterson, was present in the gallery on Monday (August 7) and apologized to the judge for lashing out in court last year – describing it as an ‘emotional time.’ For those that don’t remember, Sonstar was removed from court in December 2022 after lunging towards the prosecution.

What We Know About the Tory Lanez-Megan Thee Stallion Incident

On July 12, 2022, both Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez were hanging out at a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s home in Los Angeles, California. Megan and Tory had gotten into a car with Tory’s bodyguard and were leaving the party when an argument broke out between the two artists – pandemonium ensued.

According to Megan, Tory Lanez pulled out a gun and started shooting at her feet after she exited the vehicle – while shooting, Tory allegedly told Megan to ‘Dance, b**ch.’ Megan ended up suffering gunshot wounds to her foot and underwent surgery after being rushed to the hospital by responding authorities.

“I was recently the victim of an act of violence by a man,” Megan Thee Stallion wrote in October 2020 after Judge Herriford issued a protective order against Lanez. “After a party, I was shot twice as I walked away from him. We were not in a relationship. Truthfully, I was shocked that I ended up in that place.”

While Megan Thee Stallion wasn’t in court for the sentencing, she did release a written statement that was read to the jury. “For once, the defendant must be forced to face the full consequences of his heinous actions and face justice.” As a result of the sentence, Tory Lanez will spend the next 9 years behind bars.
