Upon investigating the shooting, police found a note written by King prior to his tragic passing. The note reportedly read, “If you’re reading this, I’m dead.” The shooting took place around 1:00 in the afternoon.
After authorities responded to the call of a shooting, witnesses revealed the direction in which Duarte ran from the scene of the crime. Police eventually came upon Duarte who attempted to escape them. After police drew his gun, Duarte fell causing his firearm to drop.
He was arrested without incident. King was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead after police rushed him to a nearby hospital. Now, Duarte is being held in Dauphin County Prison, where he is facing criminal homicide and prohibited possession of a firearm charges.
According to Penn Live, a witness heard what is believed to be King yelling for help before hearing gunshots. It was after hearing gunshots that the witness saw the teen laying on the ground with Duarte standing over him.
She told police she looked to her right and saw the boy on the ground and Duarte over him. Kyan said “help” again, but this time it was fainter, and Duarte shot him two more times before Duarte realized he was being watched, then he ran, Penn Live reported.
Another witness said she talked to King as he tried to escape Duarte. She said he told her that Duarte had raped him. The witness said she attempted to cover King with a towel before Duarte found them and started shooting at him.
According to Penn Live, Duarte had been charged in two sexual assault cases one in 2007 and one in 2010. He was added to Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law registry in 2015 and later released from the State Correctional Institute Camp Hill in May 2018. Duarte’s first court hearing is scheduled for September 28.
