The Book of Abramelin tells the story of an Egyptian magician or mage named Abraham, or Abra-Melin, who taught a system of magic to Abraham of Worms, a Jew in Worms, Germany, presumed to have lived from c.1362–c.1458. We assume the name is a form of Abraham that comes from Hebrew and means “father of multitudes.”
Blaise
Blaise is a French surname from Latin, meaning “to lisp.” Blaise belonged to a Christian martyr and renowned warlock. In Arthurian legend, Blaise was the name of Merlin’s secretary.
Eliphas
Éliphas Lévi Zahed, born Alphonse Louis Constant, was a French esotericist, poet, and author of more than twenty books about magic, Kabbalah, alchemical studies, and the occult. Eliphas shares the same root with Alphonse, meaning “noble” and “battle-ready.”
Gwydion
Gwydion, in the Welsh Mabinogion, is the son of the goddess Dôn. He was considered a master of magic and poetry and a somewhat dubious character. Gwydion comes from Welsh and means “from the trees.”
Alatar
Meaning “after comer,” Alatar is the immortal wizard sent to Middle Earth to fight away Sauron in Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings series.
Severus
A Roman family name from Latin, Severus means “stern.” Severus Snape famously founded Hogwarts and was sorted into Slytherin House. A fantastic name!
Saruman
If Severus sounds too “severe” for you, consider Saruman. It comes from Old English and means “man of the kill.” So, still not the greatest meaning but we think the name is still appealing. It belongs to a wizard living in Middle Earth in the third age in The Lord Of The Rings.
Rubeus
Rubeus is the name of an amicable half-wizard, half-giant in the Harry Potter universe. We assume this name is based on Reuben, a name that comes from Hebrew and means “behold, a son.”
Albus
Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. He’s considered one of the greatest wizard of all time. Albus comes from English and means “bright.” It’s one of our favorite wizard names on this list.
Dune
A subtle nature name, Dune refers to the mounds of sand found on beaches. The name comes from the novel Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt.
Elric
In The Dresden Files book series, you find a wizarding character named Elric. Elric comes from English and means “wise ruler.”
Fabian
Fabian is a charming Latin name that we wish parents would use more often. The name means “bean grower.” It belongs to an pure-blood wizard in the Harry Potter series.
Gandolf
One of the most famous wizard names of all time belongs to the character Gandolf. Gandolf comes from Old Norse and means “elf wand.” Gandolf leads The Fellowship of the Ring in the Tolkien novels.
Lucius
Lucius is the wizard father of Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter. Lucius is a fabulous name that was once popular in the United States but has not been since the 1960s. Lucius means “light” despite the character being so dark!

Pallando
A wizard from the Lord Of The Rings series, who was sent to Middle Earth to save its people from Sauron. The literary name means “far-traveling one.”
Prospero
Thanks to Shakespeare’s Tempest, Prospero is a name that lives on today. The character is a magic sorceror in the play. The name is the Latinate form of Prosper and means “succeed.” Prospero is one of the wizard names from this list that feels like it would work out very well for your son!
Puck
Let’s stick with Shakespeare for a moment. Puck is a character in A Midsummer Night’s Dream that causes a whole lot of mischief. However, Puck was not a name invented by the Bard. The magical nature sprite has been in European folklore for centuries.
Radagast
We’re not sure how realistic an option Radagast would be for a real-life boy. It’s another one of the wizard names from Tolkien. The name is likely inspired by a Slavic name that means “brown village.”
Rincewind
Another one of the strange wizard names, Rincewind comes from Terry Pratchett’s novel, Discworld. As the book details, the name means “idiot.” So, maybe not the best one for a real boy!
Atlantes
Atlantes is the plural form of Atlas, meaning “book of maps” or “bearer of the heavens.” An evil wizard, the sorcerer is mentioned in the medieval poem Orlando Furioso.
Ganondorf
A name that means “fair” in Irish tradition, Ganondorf names the antagonist in The Legend of Zelda. It’s a mouthful of a name but not impossible!
Jareth
Fans of the 1986 film Labyrinth will recognize the name Jareth, the Goblin King. Although he’s never really lumped in with other wizards of pop culture, he certainly shares many qualities with them. Jareth is an invented name, likely inspired by Jared, meaning “to descend.”
Menw
Menw is a delightful Welsh name that you rarely encounter in the real world. Menw is a shapeshifting knight and ally to King Arthur in Arthurian legend. So tied to the legend, this name is now considered to mean “enchanted knight.”
Harry
No wizard names list would be complete without Harry, the name of your favorite young wizard at Hogwarts. Harry is an English, diminutive form of Henry. Henry means “estate ruler.”
