Jesse Tyler Ferguson Reveals the ‘Surprising’ Ways Fatherhood Has Changed Him

Parenthood changes us all. For Jesse Tyler Ferguson, it was his reaction to being vomited and urinated on that has really “surprised” him. We love a dad who is not afraid to share those hard truths about parenting so when Ferguson opened up about fathering his 8-month-old son, Beckett Mercer, we were delighted.

For all the parents who have been thrown up on, spit on, urinated, and pooped on by the ones you love the most, this one is for you!

Jesse Tyler Ferguson recently opened up about how differently he reacts to things when they involve his young baby.

“I’m surprised at how unaffected I am when he vomits on me,” Ferguson, 45, told People.

“If I saw that happening to someone else, I would probably get the dry heaves, but when he does it on me, it’s fine,” he continued. “He’s urinated on me and I’m not bothered by it. That’s probably the most surprising thing!”

The new dad shares his son with husband, producer Justin Mikita, has been enjoying the unexpected downtime the pandemic has offered him. It means more time bonding with his baby boy, even when things get messy.

“I had just finished Modern Family, which I had done for 11 years, and we knew Beckett was coming in July,” said Ferguson, who filmed the Emmy-winning show’s finale last February.

Therefore, the show ending coupled with the pandemic created the perfect storm for him to just be present for his son.

“There was this forced opportunity to stop and relax and be in the moment. I was able to really focus on Beckett coming into our lives.”

“It’s astonishing,” the actor said. “I can be in a bad mood and seeing him super excited, kicking and smiling, it just immediately lifts my spirits. It’s so pure and sweet. And it gives me so much joy.”

That’s not all Ferguson has been up to, however. He just co-authored a cookbook with his friend Julie Tanous. Food Between Friends is the title of the cookbook which pays “homage to their hometowns as they whip up modern California food with Southern and Southwestern spins in their debut cookbook.”

Ferguson and Mikita became first-time parents in July last year. “Jesse and Justin welcomed their little bundle of joy Beckett Mercer Ferguson-Mikita on July 7, 2020. The new parents are overjoyed and excited for this new journey as a family of three,” a rep’s statement read at the time.

It looks like the journey has been a steady one so far, mess and all.
