Just because Kate Middleton and Prince William are part of the Royal Family doesn’t mean they aren’t human – just like the rest of us. It’s something we got a taste of on Sunday as the Royal couple took to the red carpet at the 76th EE BAFTA Film Awards, which took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
As they made their way down the red carpet – looking dapper, as usual – Middleton can be seen laughing hysterically at something someone said. The couple continued to walk as they whispered something to one another – and that’s when it happened. Middleton gave William a quick love tap on the behind.
The moment was captured in a video taken by Vogue Magazine, which they then shared on social media. “Princess Kate gave Prince William a love tap as they arrived at the 2023 #BAFTAs, proving that royals really are just like us— a regular husband and wife that sometimes like to cop a feel,” the caption read.
It was a special moment for Kate Middleton and Prince William, who don’t show their affection for one another often – at least in public. It was also a special appearance for the couple, who were unable to attend the previous two EE BAFTA Film Awards due to his grandfather’s death and ‘diary constraints.’
It’s a ceremony that they don’t miss often – in fact, it’s the only two times William has missed the event since being appointed President of the British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) back in 2010. As for Middleton, she has been a regular attendee of the ceremony since 2017 – her first appearance.
As always, the two dressed to impress at the event. Kate Middleton wore a one-shoulder white dress by Alexander McQueen – coupled with elbow-length black gloves, stunning gold jewelry, and Zara earrings. Meanwhile, Prince William wore a fancy black suit with a matching bowtie and shiny black dress shoes.
The star-studded event was hosted by Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond. The film All Quiet on the Western Front stole the show with seven awards on the night, while Elvis and The Banshees of Inisherin each won four awards. Austin Butler won Leading Actor, and Leading Actress went to Cate Blanchett.
Body Language Expert Weighs in on Kate Middleton and Her Love Tap
To many, the quick love tap is nothing more than a flirty and playful moment between husband and wife. For those that have followed the couple extensively over the past decade, it’s something we rarely see from Kate Middleton and Prince William. With that said, everyone has their opinion about what they saw.
In an interview with The Sun, a body language expert – Judi James – weighed in on what she believes was more than just a playful display of affection. According to James, they seem ‘much less inhibited with their PDAs (public displays of affection) now that they have moved up the royal pecking order.’
She went on to explain how ‘relaxed’ and ‘openly excited’ the couple appear as they used more eye contact and touch rituals than in the past. She also believes it might be a small ‘swipe’ at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – who recently said Royal men are urged to marry someone who ‘fits the mold.’

It’s also important to note that Middleton had attempted to hold her husband’s hand before the love tap occurred. James says it’s possible that the love tap was nothing more than reprimand for him denying the attempt. Either way, it’s refreshing to see the Prince and Princess act like a normal couple from time to time.
