Fergi Opens Up About Being a Grandmother and How Proud Princess Diana Would Be of Her Own Grandchildren

Sarah Ferguson – the former wife of Prince Andrew – finally feels like she can speak openly, now that Queen Elizabeth II has passed. She recently sat down with Good Morning America for an interview as she promotes the release of her newest book, titled A Most Intriguing Lady – which is available now.

In the interview, she said she feels ‘liberated’ and ‘can just sort of say openly what I want to say without worrying I’m going to offend somebody’ – adding that she’s ‘truly authentic Sarah now.’ She went on to talk about how incredibly rewarding it is to be a grandmother to two grandchildren with a third on the way.

She only wishes that she could share that reward with Princess Diana, who would be a grandmother to five grandchildren today – if she were alive. Diana passed away on August 31, 1997 after sustaining injuries in a car crash. Diana and Ferguson – who goes by Fergie – were always extremely close.

“I think we’d have a granny-off. Because she would run faster in the races. I wonder — she’d probably be funnier. No, I think I’d be funnier,” Ferguson said during her GMA interview. Fergie also believes that Princess Diana would be extremely proud of her two children – Prince William and Prince Harry

There are seven grandchildren between Diana and Ferguson. Diana would have five – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis (through her son, Prince William, and his wife, Kate Middleton), as well as Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana (through her son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle.

Meanwhile, Sarah Ferguson has two grandchildren of her own – Sienna Elizabeth (through her daughter, Princess Beatrice, and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi) and August (through her daughter, Princess Eugenie, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank). Princess Eugenie also has a second child on the way.

In an interview with PEOPLE on March 1, Ferguson said her grandchildren follow her around like Peter Pan – giving herself the nickname ‘Super Gran Pan.’ She’s surprised at the difference between her grandchildren and her daughters, explaining how August is interested in trains, instead of barbie dolls.

Sarah Ferguson is Thrilled to See Prince Harry Happy

With all the turmoil going on between Prince Harry and the rest of the Royal Family – more specifically, between his father, King Charles III, and his brother, Prince William – Sarah Ferguson knew she would be asked about it. Sure enough, she was and she had the perfect response – a mature and loving response.

“What I’m thrilled about is seeing Harry so happy. He’s got his lovely wife, and he’s got beautiful children. He deserves to be loved like that,” Fergie said in the GMA interview. And that’s something Harry would agree with, considering how much happier he feels as he lives out his new life in Montecito, California.

As for how she feels about the drama happening within the Royal Family, Fergie had a similar response. “I don’t believe that any single person has the right to judge another person. I’m not in a position myself to make any judgments. I have been judged all my life, and I have no judgment on the Sussexes,” she said.

Her new novel A Most Intriguing Lady, which was released on March 7, is a ‘sweeping, romantic compulsively readable historical saga about a Duke’s daughter—the perfect Victorian lady—who secretly moonlights as an amateur sleuth for high society’s inner circle,” according to the book’s description.
