Amy Schumer Gets Candid About Why She Almost Immediately Switched from Breastfeeding to Formula

Amy Schumer, who has been very candid about her post-pregnancy journey, recently shared that she stopped breastfeeding when her son Gene was one month old.

Breastfeeding versus formula is one of the most divisive issues around early parenting. Though the general attitude should be “fed is best,” meaning that any method is the best method as long as your baby is getting what he or she needs, new moms often face societal pressure to breastfeed their babies, though sometimes it’s not physically or logistically possible. Even famous moms like Schumer.

Amy Schumer reveals why she switched from breastfeeding to formula when baby Gene was just one month old.

The comedian was recently interviewed on the podcast Informed Pregnancy and Parenting and spoke about why she decided to stop breastfeeding.

“I wanted him to get the colostrum,” she said during the interview about the early breastmilk she produced while pregnant. “We had a lactation expert come over. He didn’t latch and I just didn’t feel that push to make that happen. Then I pumped for like the first month.”

She decided, though, that pumping was “not for her” and ultimately decided not to continue after one month.

Despite the pressure, Schumer noted that new moms should always make sure to choose the best path forward for themselves.

“Some people just absolutely love it and I’m so happy for them, and it was just bumming me out. But then I was also kind of proud doing it and whatever and getting him the milk and stuff,” Schumer said.

“Then once it occurred to me that I could stop, I was like, ‘I’m going to stop.’ …And then, every week what I did was just took away one session of pumping,” she continued.

Despite her knowing it was the right decision for her and her family, she did face some backlash from friends when she announced she was no longer breastfeeding.

Serena Williams kind of yelled at me and was like, ‘There’s a lot of sugar in that.’ Even though it was great and he was meeting his milestones on Similac, we switched him to Holle,” she said. The German formula brand has “less sugar and he did great on that,” she continued.

Her ultimate message to new moms to choose what’s best for you. “You matter and it’s going to be better for your baby that you’re okay,” she said.
