After Dad Losses Both of His Son’s Less Than a Year Apart, He’s Getting to Hear One of His Son’s Heartbeat Again

Jordan Spahn lost his 21-year-old son, Matthew, after he was hit by a car on a dark road near Houston, Texas in October 2018. Matthew died 10 days later from the injuries he sustained, according to KHOU.

The family faced another heartbreaking loss less than a year later in February 2019. As KWHI reports, Jordan’s oldest son, 25-year-old Jonah, was killed after he was also hit by a car on a local highway.

Now, as KHOU reports, Jordan has been able to listen to Matthew’s heartbeat again after visiting a woman whose life was saved as a result of Matthew’s organ donation.

Jordan’s fiance, Summer Mossbarger, shared the emotional moment on Facebook after they met Kristi Russ, the woman who had received Matthew’s heart. Summer shared:

“I’m not sure how many know that Matthew Spahn was an organ donor, and he was able to save five lives with seven organs and countless others with skin and tissue,” she wrote. “Kristi Russ was the recipient of Matthew’s heart, and she is such a sweet, grateful woman that is truly so thankful for the gift of life Matthew gave.”

The video shows Jordan holding up a stethoscope to Russ’ chest to listen to his son’s heartbeat. “It’s so strong,” he tells her. “He’s probably up there running laps.”

“It’s almost like getting to see Matthew again,” Jordan told KHOU. “I know his heart continues to beat. […] You’ve got your ups and downs. You’ve got your questions. You wonder about the timing. When it was all said and done with, we figured out exactly why things happen the way they do.”

Russ also felt very moved by the meeting, saying, “You’re very thankful because you know without it, I would have never survived. I was on borrowed time,” she told the news outlet. “He still lives on. It’s his heart that’s just in my body. Anytime they want to hear him, I’m a text away.”
