Is SpongeBob Squarepants Actually Gay?

SpongeBobIsGay was trending on Twitter and for good reason. But do all signs point to SpongeBob Squarepants actually being gay? You decide.

It all started when whoever (was and/or is) running the Nickelodean Twitter account posted a picture of SpongeBob alongside transgender actor, Michael D. Cohen, a regular on Nickelodeon’s Henry Danger, and Avatar Korra, a bisexual character from the network’s The Legend of Korra.

Along with his proximity to these other members of the LGBTQ+ community, the text of the tweet — “Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month” — could imply that SpongeBob is gay.

As one would presume, the montage suggests (along with the caption) that SpongeBob is gay. But it could also imply that SpongeBob is an ally of the LGBTQ+ community. Or, it is a possibility that Spongebob could be bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning, after all.

But before we jump to conclusions, let me plant a seed of doubt in your mind: SpongeBob’s creator, Stephen Hillenburg, urges he is not gay.

When asked about SpongeBob’s sexuality in 2005 – Hillenburg told Reuters “It doesn’t have anything to do with what we’re trying to do.”

“We never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual,” he continued. “We’re just trying to be funny and this has got nothing to do with the show.”

But that explanation wasn’t enough as many questioned SpongeBob’s closeness to Patrick and lack of romantic interest as Sandy as evidence. But Hillenburg quickly rebutted, claiming he wrote Sandy to be “a strong female character that could be a friend to SpongeBob but not a love interest.”

Still not convinced? Why the tweet? WHY?!

Well, Hillenburg, unfortunately, died in 2018 after battling ALS for a year and since, Nickelodeon has gone against his wishes by planning a spin-off series. This was after Hillenburg explicitly said (and more than once) how he did not want to spin-off Spongebob.

That being said, turning SpongeBob into a gay icon also goes against Hillenburg’s wishes. My conclusion? Give it time. SpongeBob may come out soon!
