Paris Hilton revealed that she’d been physically abused by a string of ex-boyfriends in her past. In an interview, she said that she was first abused as a teen at the Provo Canyon Boarding School in Utah. Her trauma persisted into adulthood and resulted in unhealthy relationships with several men she dated.
“I went through multiple abusive relationships,” the entrepreneur told People. “I was strangled, I was hit, I was grabbed aggressively. I put up with things no one should.”
Ahead of a new documentary about painful moments in her past, Paris Hilton discussed the toll childhood abuse can have throughout life.
In her new documentary, This Is Paris, set to premiere September 14 on her YouTube channel, the former reality TV star revisits some of the most painful moments of her past that occurred at Provo Boarding School. The trauma stayed with her into later life and resulted in toxic, abusive relationships.
“I had become so used to it at Provo, that it made me feel like it was normal,” Hilton told People. The relationships with all five of her ex-boyfriends, whom she said abused her, started the same: “They all seemed like such nice guys and then the true colors would show,” she explained. “They’d get jealous, or defensive or try to control me. And then there would come a point where they would become physically, verbally, and emotionally abusive.”
“I didn’t really understand what love or relationships were,” Hilton said.
She continued, “I didn’t really understand what love or relationships were. I thought that them getting so crazy meant that they were in love with me. Looking back, I can’t believe I let people treat me like that.”
Hilton also said that she never would have made the infamous 2003 sex tape that leaked, if she’d not been traumatized by her time at Provo. “I would never have let anyone into my life like [the man in the tape, whom she was dating at the time]. I met the worst person I could meet and if I hadn’t gone to Provo, I wouldn’t have entertained the thought of letting him into my life. Provo affected my future relationships.”
Thankfully, the experience of making the documentary helped her release her trauma.
With the pain of her past behind her, Hilton is now happily dating Carter Reum, an entrepreneur and author.
“I feel so safe with him,” says Hilton of her boyfriend of nine months. “Before, I don’t think I was really ready for a good relationship. But I’ve learned so much. And I’m so grateful to have found my perfect match.”

Her documentary will, no doubt, reveal even more about a side of Hilton that fans aren’t used to seeing. In the trailer for the film, she says “Something happened in my childhood that I’ve never talked about with anyone. But I couldn’t tell you guys, because every time I tried, I would get punished by them. I still have nightmares about it. The only thing that saved my sanity was thinking about who I wanted to become when I got out of there.”
The project, spearheaded by Emmy-winning director Alexandra Dean, promises to “unseal the hidden past of the international icon,” with Paris facing “the heartbreaking trauma that forged who she is today,” according to the official description.

We hope the documentary and the interviews Hilton has done lately help others come to terms with their own trauma. We’re so thankful that this celeb is sharing her story. Childhood abuse doesn’t just disappear, but instead, trauma often informs so many decisions made later in life.
