Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” is on track to be one of the biggest (and most surprising) songs of the year. It’s mostly surprising because it involves an unexpected collaboration between the up-and-coming rapper and country legend Billy Ray Cyrus (Miley’s dad). Together, the duo created a hit country/rap crossover that has topped the charts for weeks. (It is still the No. 1 song in the country.) The result has been a massive hit, particularly for the tween crowd.
The principal of Lander Elementary in Mayfield Heights, OH recently shared a video on Twitter showcasing her students’ absolute love for the song. In fact, they love it so much, the school’s fifth-grade talent show ended with the school dancing and singing along with the hit. Watch below.
To show his appreciation for his young fans, Lil Nas X showed up to the school for a surprise performance last Wednesday in perhaps the best end-of-year concert ever. Lil Nas X had responded to the original video post saying, “when they want a free show.” The school’s principal, Felicia Evans, DMed the rapper to see if he was being serious, and the two worked out a plan for him to come to the school and surprise the kids. Lil Nas X performed “Old Town Road,” of course, among other hits.

Please note: those kids are SO! INTO! IT!
The Lander students aren’t the only group sharing their appreciation for the rapper’s hit song. Last month, third-graders from Birmingham, AL performed an education-themed version that included lyrics like “I’m gonna ace my test / I’m gonna raise my score.”
We can’t wait to see what remix his fans come up with next – luckily, they’ve got all summer vacation to work on their next big hit!
What do you think of Lil Nas X’s surprise appearance at an elementary school? Coolest thing you’ve ever seen, or… coolest thing you’ve ever seen?
