Adele Admits Her 9-Year-Old Son Struggles With Her Divorce: ‘Why Don’t You Love My Dad Anymore?’

Adele recently admitted she has struggled to help her 9-year-old son process her divorce from his father, Simon Konecki.

The pair called it quicks in 2019 after two years of marriage and seven years together. Recently, the mother of one revealed a few of the heartbreaking things her son, Angelo, has asked her while chatting to Vogue and British Vogue for the November issue.

Adele and Simon’s divorce was finalized earlier this year, which could be why Angelo is asking questions.

“[Angelo] has so many simple questions for me that I can’t answer because I don’t know the answer,” Adele shared during her interview. “Like, ‘Why can’t we still live together?’ That’s just not what people do when they get divorced. ‘But why not?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t f—ing know. That’s not what society does.’ And: ‘Why don’t you love my dad anymore?’ And I’d be like, ‘I do love your dad. I’m just not in love.'”

Adele went on to explain that not even she knows what is in store next for her family.

“I don’t really get it either,” Adele said. “There are rules that are made up in society of what happens and doesn’t happen in marriage and after marriage, but I’m a very complex person. I’ve always let him know how I’m feeling from a very young age because I felt quite frazzled as an adult.”

The singer explained how at least one song on her upcoming album is “obviously about stuff that happened” in her and Simon’s relationship, “but I wanted to put it on the album to show Angelo what I expect him to treat his partner like, whether it be a woman or a man or whatever.”

When she reflected back on her past marriage, Adele did not look back with rose-colored glasses.

“I was just going through the motions and I wasn’t happy,” she told Vogue. “Neither of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that. It was just: I want my son to see me really love, and be loved. It’s really important to me.”

Earlier this month, she revealed the first single off her forthcoming record will be out on October 15. But she noted it will not be a divorce album.

“I realized that I was the problem,” Adele joked. “‘Cause all the other albums are like, ‘You did this! You did that! F–k you! Why can’t you arrive for me?’ Then I was like: ‘Oh, s–t, I’m the running theme, actually. Maybe it’s me!’ … [Simon’s] not one of my exes. He’s the dad of my child. It was more me divorcing myself.”
