Amy Schumer has been honest and open about her experiences with pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. She’s shared images of herself wearing mesh hospital underwear, talked openly about dealing with hyperemesis gravidarum throughout her pregnancy, shared candid pictures of herself pumping, and much more. She also hasn’t shied away from sharing details about her marriage to Chris Fischer, including revealing that he is on the autism spectrum.
So when a fan asked her how she would “cope” if her son was diagnosed with autism in a comment on a recent Instagram post, Schumer responded with her trademark candor.
“I’d like to see a documentary of you discovering your mate is diagnosed with autism and how you cope with the possibility that your child will be on the spectrum,” the fan wrote.
Schumer responded, “How I cope? I don’t see being on the spectrum as a negative thing. My husband is my favorite person I’ve ever met. He’s kind, hilarious, interesting and talented and I admire him. Am I supposed to hope my son isn’t like that? I will pay attention and try and provide him with the tools he needs to overcome whatever challenges come up like all parents. I’d be disappointed if he liked the Big Bang theory and Nascar not if he has ASD.”
The comment appeared on a recent post Schumer shared of her son, Gene. She asked, “Would anyone be interested in seeing a docu-series of my pregnancy and birth?” The overwhelming response: Yes! (Obviously).
We love Amy’s honest response, and we hope she isn’t kidding about that documentary.
