Amy Schumer Clarifies That She Did Not Name Son ‘Genital’ on Purpose: ‘It’s So Embarrassing’

Amy Schumer wants to set the record straight: She truly did purposefully name her baby boy “Genital,” which is apparently a thing some people assumed.

The comedian, who revealed earlier this month that she changed her son’s middle name after realizing “Gene Attell Fischer” sounds a lot like “genital fissure,” is opening up about her name mistake.

Earlier in April, on an episode of her podcast, 3 Girls 1 Keith, Schumer went into detail about the embarrassing realization that her son’s name took on an unfortunate meaning when said out loud. She revealed that they’d changed Gene’s middle name from Attell to David — both in honor of Schumer’s friend Dave Attell — after realizing what his full name sounded like. “It was Gene Attell Fischer, but we realized that by accident we named our son ‘genital’,” she said.

Apparently, though, some people believed Schumer — who, yes, is a comedian — named her son that on purpose as a joke. Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

So, during a chat with Howard Stern, Schumer set the record about Gene’s name straight.

In the clip, someone — presumably Schumer’s husband Chris Fischer — hands Schumer baby Gene, who is set to turn one on May 5. After a few remarks about Gene’s cuteness, Stern starts to get into the name issue. “I love the story that you gave Gene a middle name—”

Schumer clearly knows where this is going, and with a look of embarrassment on her face, she covers Gene’s ears and interjects, “Oh my god, don’t tell him! We aren’t telling him!”

“So embarrassing,” she adds.

Stern then asks her when she realized that “Gene Attell” sounds a lot like “genital.” “About a month in,” Schumer says.

“You know, you’re like the new parents, just kind of tired and in ecstasy… And then, I don’t know if like some troll on the internet or somebody… And I read it, and I was like, ‘Oh, my god.’

“It never dawned on me,” Schumer adds. “All the blood rushed to my head.”

Schumer then talks about how people would tell her it didn’t really matter, but it was too late. She could not escape the reality of the name. She also adds that her husband’s last name, Fischer, made things worse, since Gene’s full name ended up sounding a lot like “genital fissure.”

“The first of many mistakes,” Schumer adds with her signature humor, in reference to her life as a mom.

“Everybody kind gave me credit,” Schumer says, referring to the people who think she chose the name on purpose or as a decoy. “Like no, that is just a huge f*** up.”
