Actors Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds Express Their Regret and Sorrow For Their Decision to Get Married on One of America’s Oldest Plantations in 2012

Actors Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have been married since 2012. The couple chose one of America’s oldest plantations, Boone Hall, to exchange their vows and now they are apologizing for it.

Lively and Reynolds are two people who are often giving their millions away to fight for those less fortunate. In March 2020, they donated $1 million to food banks amid the coronavirus outbreak, plus $400,000 to New York hospitals. In June 2020, they donated at least $400,000 to support Indigenous women and to the NAACP on George Floyd‘s behalf.

However, they are now admitting the mistake they made by choosing to get married on the South Carolina plantation eight years ago. In an interview with Fast Company, the actor said, “It’s something we’ll always be deeply and unreservedly sorry for.”

While talking about his many buckets, Reynolds was also asked about his 2018 tweet in which he praised the movie, Black Panther. Many called him out for being a hypocrite because of where he and Lively got married.

“It’s impossible to reconcile,” Reynolds admitted.

He then continued saying, “What we saw at the time was a wedding venue on Pinterest. What we saw after was a place built upon devastating tragedy.” In an attempt to change the way they felt about their decision, Reynolds said he and Lively got remarried at home years later.

“Years ago we got married again at home—but shame works in weird ways. A giant fucking mistake like that can either cause you to shut down or it can reframe things and move you into action. It doesn’t mean you won’t fuck up again. But repatterning and challenging lifelong social conditioning is a job that doesn’t end.”

Reynolds and Lively choose to reframe the way they saw things and ever since used their money to help support the NAACP and other organizations which are fighting for equal rights for all Americans. “We want to educate ourselves about other people’s experiences and talk to our kids about everything, all of it . . . especially our own complicity,” the couple said.
