Body Cam Footage of the Attack on Paul Pelosi Shared With the Public

UPDATE: 1/27/2023 — On Friday, body cam footage from the night police responded to the attack on Paul Pelosi inside his own home has been released. According to The New York Times, the footage shows Paul Pelosi and the intruder, David DePape, answering the door.

Pelosi was in a button-down shirt and boxer shorts holding a glass, while DePape was a bit behind Pelosi. Pelosi and DePape are seen struggling to gain control of a hammer. When police asked Pelosi and DePape what was going on, DePape answered that “everything was good.”

It was at that moment that DePape pulled the hammer from Pelosi’s hand and struck Pelosi in the head with it as Pelosi attempted to run away. Police immediately acted, taking DePape to the ground.

Katie Couric shared the body cam footage on her Instagram page. Warning: the below video contains graphic violence and language.

UPDATE: 11/2/2022 – On Wednesday afternoon, new documents were released to the public revealing specific details about the attack on Paul Pelosi. According to documents obtained by Business Insider, Pelosi was awoken by his attacker who was standing over his bed.

New Documents Reveal the Severity of Paul Pelosi’s Injuries Following Horrific Attack

Authorities were allegedly at the Pelosi residence when David DePape struck the 82-year-old in front of police officers. Documents revealed that DePape hit Pelosi at full force in the head. Further details suggest that Pelosi was unconscious in a pool of his own blood for at least three minutes.

In a statement shared by San Francisco’s District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, she said, “What’s clear is this case is vulnerable to misinformation. This was not a random act of violence and this was not a random residential burglary–he sought to come and harm the speaker of the house of the United States.”

Late Monday night, CNN reported that in a new statement released by Nancy Pelosi, she revealed that while her husband Paul has begun his recovery process, it will be a long road ahead. “Since the horrific attack on Paul early Friday, we have been deluged with thousands of messages conveying concern, prayers, and warm wishes. Our family thanks everyone for their kindness.”

As Mamas Uncut previously reported, a motive is also becoming clear. According to the authorities, CNN reports that David DePape has also been charged with one count of “attempted kidnapping of a US official.” It’s believed that his ultimate plan was to “hold [Nancy Pelosi] hostage.”

Immediately following the horrific attack, Nancy’s 82-year-old husband Paul had brain surgery as a result. According to People, Paul reportedly suffered facial injuries. Although Pelosi was DePape’s attended target, she was in DC at the time of the attack.

However, despite the severity of his injuries, Pelosi is still considered to be in stable condition. Reports further reveal that the assailant was looking for Nancy Pelosi, but she was not at her San Fransisco residence at the time.  The assailant allegedly “confronted the speaker’s husband” and shouted, “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy,” People reports.

That is when the suspect attacked Paul. It was also reported that the attacker attempted to tie Paul up and wait for Nancy to arrive home. Nancy was in Washington, D.C. at the time of the attack. Still, no motive has been publicly reported. However, Nancy Pelosi is speaking out for the first time since the attack.

“Yesterday morning, a violent man broke into our family home, demanded to confront me, and brutally attacked my husband Paul,” Nancy wrote in an initial letter to her colleagues in Congress. Our children, our grandchildren, and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop. We are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services, and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving.”

“Please know that the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes from so many in the Congress is a comfort to our family and is helping Paul make progress with his recovery. His condition continues to improve. We are also comforted by the words of the Book of Isaiah: ‘Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’ We thank you and pray for the continued safety and well-being of your family.”

Since the attack, the assailant has been identified as 42-year-old David DePape. According to Fox News, he has been charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and more. While a motive remains unclear, The Washington Post reports that DePape had a blog filled with hundreds of posts focusing on “memes in support of fringe commentators and far-right personalities.”

While talking with Fox News, DePape’s stepdaughter, Inti Gonzalez, called DePape “abusive” and alleged that while he was married to her mother, he “physically and sexually abused” her and her siblings when they were “very young” up until about 2008.

“This attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband came as a shock to me, though not much considering the kind of extreme abuse he had inflicted on me and my brothers,” Inti added. “I didn’t see this coming and there was no sign of the possibility from his end.”

She continued to say that she hasn’t seen DePape since 2014 but believed he “genuinely [tried] to be a good person but the monster in him was always too strong for him to be safe to be around.”

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins now believes DePape’s actions were “politically motivated.” While the charges against him are already extensive, more charges could come in the following days.

While in their San Fransisco home on October 28, an assailant broke into the home of Paul Pelosi and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

According to initial reports, the assailant proceeded to attack the Speaker’s 82-year-old husband once gaining access inside their home. Nancy was not home at the time of the early morning attack.

A spokesperson for the Speaker, Drew Hammill, shared a statement with the public following the attack. “Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi.”

Hammill continued to say that Paul was taken to a local hospital “where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery.” The statement continued to say authorities were able to apprehend the suspect.

An investigation into the attack is ongoing. A motive, if known, has not yet been shared with the public.

Hammill’s statement concluded, saying, “The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time.”

Mamas Uncut will continue to update this report with any further information that may come out regarding this case.

Sadly this is not the first time Nancy Pelosi has been the subject of a violent threat. As CNBC reports, last December a North Carolina man known as Cleveland Meredith was sentenced to 28 months in prison after he pleaded guilty “to threatening to shoot Pelosi.”

CNBC further reports that 77-year-old Steven Martis of Arizona was sentenced in February to 21 months behind bars for threatening to kill Pelosi in messages to her D.C. office. Further, this current attack on Paul Pelosi “comes as the U.S. Capitol Police record a drastic rise in threat cases — a 144% increase from 2017 to 2021,” the department reported.
