Celebrity Divorces and Splits That Shocked Us in 2020

2020 has been a difficult year for so many of us. However, living through a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic could be responsible for people gaining a new perspective about the things they cherish and value the most. Marriage is tough and it’s natural for adults to grow and change in ways that they never expected. 2020 was an exceptionally hard year on celebrity marriages and relationships.

We have reported on several celebrity divorces and breakups that have unfortunately happened in the past several months. Although living life in the public sphere has to make these splits even harder, we’re thankful for it as it helps normalize a completely natural part of life. What celebrity divorces shocked you the most this year? Here are the splits that we never saw coming!

Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis

The Booksmart director, 36, and the Ted Lasso star, 45, have split, ending their engagement of more than seven years.

“There was absolutely no drama or scandal, they just didn’t work as a couple anymore,” a source revealed to Entertainment Tonight. “If you’re looking for a juicy story, there just isn’t one.”

Iggy Azalea & Playboi Carti

According to CNN, the new mom had been dating fellow rapper Playboi Carti since 2018. And through a series of social media posts, she confirmed that that is who the father of her son, Onyx is.

“What I meant last night was that I’m raising my son alone, and I’m not in a relationship,” Azalea wrote on Instagram in October.

Lake Bell & Scott Campbell

Lake Bella and husband, Scott Campbell split after seven years of marriage. We did not see this celebrity divorce coming!

“After 9 years together, 7 years married, 2 sparkling children…Scott and I are ending our marriage, but continuing our loving family,” Bell, 41, wrote on Instagram in October.

Taraji P. Henson & Kelvin Hayden

The Empire actress and her fiancé Kelvin Hayden have ended their engagement.

“I haven’t said it yet but it didn’t work out,” Henson said during an appearance on The Breakfast Club morning radio show as she revealed that she and Hayden had split, nearly two years after the former NFL star proposed.

Bethenny Frankel & Paul Bernon

The former Real Housewives of New York City star and her boyfriend of two years have split, according to multiple report. The New York Post’s Page Six reported that the couple quietly split in the fall. 

Ashley Hebert & J.P. Rosenbaum

The former Bachelorette and Rosenbaum have decided to end their marriage after nearly eight years. They both simultaneously announced the news on Oct. 14.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that, after months of separation, Jp and I have amicably decided to go our separate ways,” the pediatric dentist wrote alongside a photo of the couple dancing together.

Gianna Santos & Jonah Hill

The actor and his fiancée have called it quits a little over a year after getting engaged, People reported in early October. The split was amicable between the notoriously private pair, a source revealed to the outlet.

Jeff Lewis & Scott Anderson

The Flipping Out star revealed on his SiriusXM radio show Jeff Lewis Live in September that he and on-and-off boyfriend Scott Anderson have split yet again, just a few months after he announced their previous parting in May.  

Karamo Brown & Ian Jordan

“It was postponed because of the pandemic, but now it’s actually postponed officially, because my fiancé and I, we were together for 10 years, and we broke up about three and a half months ago,” the Queer Eye star told Ellen Degeneres in September. The couple had been engaged since May 2018.

Christina & Ant Anstead

After nearly two years of marriage, the Christina on the Coast star, 37, and Wheeler Dealers host, 41, announced their split. In a statement posted to her Instagram account on Sept. 18, Christina, who welcomed son Hudson London Anstead with Ant in September 2019, announced the news of their breakup.

Cardi B & Offset

Cardi B and Offset are officially calling it quits after three years of marriage. The “Bodak Yellow” rapper, 27, filed for divorce at an Atlanta courthouse on Sept. 15. The pair share a 2-year-old daughter named Kulture Kiari. This on and off couple was not the most shocking celebrity divorce of the year, but we were rooting for them!

Rachel Bilson & Bill Hader

Six months after going public with their romance, the Barry star, 42, and The O.C. alum, 38, have amicably split, multiple sources told PEOPLE.

The pair starred together in the 2013 comedy The To Do List. Hader was married to Maggie Carey, the film’s director, from 2006-2018.

Elizabeth Chambers & Armie Hammer

On July 10, Chambers announced the split on her Instagram with a throwback picture of the two. The former couple married in May 2010 and have two children together: daughter Harper Grace, 5, and son Ford Douglas Armand, 3.

Hammer recently filed for joint custody of their children.

Kacey Musgraves & Ruston Kelly

The pair announced on July 3 that they were separating after over two years of marriage, saying in a joint statement: “We’ve made this painful decision together.”

“With heavy but hopeful hearts we wanted to put our own thoughts into the air about what’s happening. These kinds of announcements are always met with scrutiny and speculation and we want to stop that before it even starts,” their statement said.

Shayna Taylor & Ryan Seacrest

The on-again-off-again couple have split for a third time. A representative for the longtime host confirmed on June 29 that the couple have gone their separate ways.

“Ryan and Shayna decided to end their romantic relationship amicably some time ago,” the rep told People. 

Kelly Clarkson & Brandon Blackstock

The singer and talk show host filed for divorce from Blackstock in Los Angeles on June 4 after early seven years of marriage.

Clarkson and Blackstock, who tied the knot in October 2013, are parents to daughter River Rose, 6 on Friday, and son Remington Alexander, 4.

Cassie Randolph & Colton Underwood

The Bachelor couple announced their breakup news on May 29 on Instagram, two months after Randolph helped nurse Underwood back to health after he contracted the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Both showed some love for the other’s post, commenting with heart emojis.

“First off, I want to say this is one of the hardest things I have had to share as neither one of us is quite ready to talk about it yet,” Randolph wrote. 

Lili Reinhart & Cole Sprouse

A source confirmed the split on May 25 that Riverdale stars Sprouse and Reinhart are again broken up. According to the source, they tend to be on and off but are currently not together.

Jaime King & Kyle Newman

On May 18, the Black Summer star filed for divorce from her director husband after 15 years together and the split appears to be far from amicable.

In addition to the divorce, King, 41, also filed a domestic violence prevention petition. The actress shares two sons, James Knight, 6, and Leo Thames, 4, with the director, 44. We hope this celebrity divorce does not get any uglier.

Caterina Scorsone & Rob Giles

After over a decade of marriage, the Grey’s Anatomy actress and her husband are going their separate ways, a source confirmed on May 8.

“Caterina and Rob have separated. They remain friends and are committed to co-parenting their children in a spirit of love,” their reps said in a joint statement. The couple shares three daughters together.

Cara Delevingne & Ashley Benson

After nearly two years together, the supermodel, 27, and the Pretty Little Liars actress, 30, split in early April.

“Cara and Ashley always had their ups and down before but it’s over now,” the source said. “Their relationship just ran its course.”

Kristin Cavallari & Jay Cutler

On April 26, the reality star announced that she and the retired NFL pro are ending their marriage. At the time, it was one of the most highly publicized celebrity divorces.

“With great sadness, after 10 years together we have come to a loving conclusion to get a divorce,” Cavallari wrote on social media. The couple shares three sons.

Rihanna & Hassan Jameel

Rihanna’s ready to shine bright on her own after splitting from her boyfriend of nearly three years, billionaire Jameel.

“Their lives were too different and it was hard to maintain a relationship,” an insider said following the news.

Vanessa Hudgens & Austin Butler

It’s time for the High School Musical actor to go her own way: after eight years together, she and boyfriend Austin Butler split.

News of their breakup broke in early January after fans noticed that neither Hudgens nor the Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood actor had posted photos celebrating the holidays together.

Mary-Kate Olsen & Olivier Sarkozy

The former Full House star, Mary-Kate Olsen, 31, has filed for divorce from Olivier Sarkozy, 53, after their marriage of nearly five years after denied an emergency petition.

The news of Mary-Kate and Oliver’s split was announced on May 13.
