Rolling Stone Receives Boatloads of Criticism After Leaving Celine Dion Off Their List of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time

If we were to ask anyone if Celine Dion is one of the 200 greatest singers of all time – we’re not talking top 5, top 10, or even top 100 – there should be no hesitation behind the answer, which is an obvious ‘YES.’ Unfortunately, Rolling Stone doesn’t seem to agree and they let everyone know in a major way.

On January 1, 2023, Rolling Stone rang in the new year by publishing ‘The 200 Greatest Singers of All-Time.’ It’s a list they first started publishing in 2008 and, while they often receive criticism for who they include, they’ve never received this level of backlash – primarily due to Celine Dion not making the cut.

Celine Dion is one of the best-selling artists of all time and has one of the greatest voices of all time, but that wasn’t enough to land on Rolling Stone’s list – according to them, there are at least 200 singers that come before her. As a result, fans of the 54-year-old singer voiced their utter disgust with her exclusion.

“Dear @RollingStone. This is Céline Dion. Leaving her off your Top 200 Greatest Singers of All Time list has to be an honest and regrettable mistake… because doing it intentionally would be criminal. So… please fix it,” said Bonnie Bernstein on Twitter, sharing a video of Celine Dion and her incredible voice.

“Respectfully, not including Celine Dion, arguably the best vocal technician of all time, in this list is borderline treasonous,” tweeted Jamie Lambert. The comments have come in the thousands as people share their support for Celine and everything she’s given to the music industry throughout her career.

With that said, it appears Rolling Stone was ready to face some backlash prior to publishing the list. “Before you start scrolling (and commenting), keep in mind that this is the Greatest Singers list, not the Greatest Voices List,” the publication wrote in the intro. “Talent is impressive; genius is transcendent.”

They went on to explain what mattered most to them in the voting process – “originality, influence, the depth of an artist’s catalog, and the breadth of their musical legacy.” You can start to see why fans are so upset over her exclusion, considering Celine Dion is the epitome of what the entire list stands for.

Celine Dion Wasn’t the Only Star Left Off the List

Celine Dion has had one of the greatest careers in the history of music – most people know her for ‘My Heart Will Go On’ and that famous scene from Titanic, but her career is so much more than that one song. Let’s not forget this is someone who can pretty much sing her songs in any language possible.

With that said, she’s not the only one Rolling Stone left off their list. Some of the others include Sting, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, and many more. While there are plenty of voices that were bound to be excluded, there are several that should be a no-brainer to include and these were just some of them.

On the other hand, there were also a lot of fans taken back by where some of the artists ranked – such as Michael Jackson, who Rolling Stone ranked at No. 86, and Brandy, who ranked at No. 193. It’s hard to imagine there being 85 singers better than MJ and 192 better than Brandy, but Rolling Stone thinks so.

Regardless of whether or not you think Celine Dion is deserving of the list, we wish her all the best moving forward as she learns to live with stiff person syndrome – a neurological disorder she was diagnosed with in December 2022. She might not be able to perform, but her legacy will carry on.
