According to a statement released by authorities, no deaths are expected and the majority of the 14 hospitalized children were hospitalized out of an abundance of caution. Still, a few children are being treated for “varying levels” of injury. The Redding Record Searchlight reported late on Thursday that two of the hospitalized children are being treated in the intensive care unit.

The other five children involved in the incident were taken to local hospitals by their parents, KRCR reported.

Due to the number of potential injuries, a “Mass Casualty Incident” was declared by Anderson police following the crash which hit the main area of the daycare where the children were congregated inside. Authorities say that the driver of the SUV is a local woman who was not impaired at the time of the incident. She was evaluated by an Anderson Police Department Drug Recognition Expert. Police added that she has been fully cooperative as they carry out their investigation. She was released after questioning, the police explained.

A number of agencies other than Anderson police responded, including the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, Mercy Medical Center, Redding Police Department, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, Shasta Regional Medical Center, and California Highway Patrol, according to the statement from Anderson authorities.
