Teenage Daycare Worker Charged with First-Degree Murder After She Suffocates ‘Fussy’ Four-Month-Old Baby

A parent’s worst nightmare became a reality when a daycare worker suffocated their four-month-old baby at a Delaware daycare because the baby was “fussy.”

19-year-old Dejoynay M. Ferguson, who was employed by the Little People Child Development, has been charged with first-degree murder after security cameras showed her suffocating the infant.

The Delaware State Police Department shared details of the tragedy in a statement on their Facebook page, saying that Ferguson had picked up the baby by her shirt and placed her on a changing table. Ferguson then put her hand over the baby’s mouth and nose for more than three minutes. The young girl was “unresponsive and motionless.”

According to police, Ferguson then waited twenty minutes before alerting anyone that the infant had died.

When police arrived, Ferguson first lied to them about what had happened, but later confessed that she had picked up the baby because she wouldn’t stop crying.

The Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families reported that the daycare did not have any complaints or “noncompliance issues” when they last visited the facility in May. Ferguson had gone through background checks, as well, before being hired. The daycare’s license has since been suspended indefinitely.

“Yesterday, a family’s world was changed forever. As a parent personally, I’m heartbroken for them,” said Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Michael Austin. “As a spokesperson for Delaware State Police, I can ensure you that everyone within this agency feels the same way. The detectives will do everything within their means to thoroughly investigate and successfully prosecute this case to ensure that justice is ensured for them.”
