DWTS’ Maks Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd Share the Story of Their Own Tragedy While Maks Was in Ukraine

While talking with People magazine, Peta Murgatroyd tells a harrowing story of what she and her 5-year-old son endured while her husband was in Ukraine filming their version of Dancing With the Stars, last October 2021. This was months before the war with Russia broke out.

As Murgatroyd revealed she was home with their 5-year-old son, Shai, when she called an ambulance to her home. She was laying on the floor of her son’s bedroom unable to move.

According to the famous dancer, she had just tested positive for COVID-19 a few days earlier. “I had no strength. I couldn’t open a dishwasher. I couldn’t open the fridge to feed Shai, to get him some toast,” Peta admitted.

It eventually got to the point that her “breath was starting to be affected. It was really dramatic.” Sadly her son had to watch as first responders put her onto the stretcher and rush her to the local emergency room.

Once she got to the hospital, Murgatroyd called her husband, fellow professional dancer, Maks Chmerkovskiy. As Mamas Uncut previously reported, while this was all happening at home in California, Chmerkovskiy was in Ukraine, his home country, filming a show.

This was several months before Maks used his social media platform to showcase the tragedy that was occurring in his home country. While talking with the doctor, Peta had her husband on speaker phone.

As Murgatroyd explained she had a feeling something was very wrong when the doctor first walked into her room. “I thought he was going to reveal some really bad news. I was like, ‘What’s wrong?’ His face dropped. He said, ‘Did you know you were pregnant?'”

With Chmerkovskiy listening through the phone, he misheard what the doctor had just said and began celebrating thinking he had just learned his wife was expecting baby number 2. Sadly, Murgatroyd had already lost the baby.

She had no idea she was pregnant. “I ultimately had no idea [I was pregnant], which in hindsight was better for my recovery because I didn’t have that super joyous moment of, ‘I’m pregnant again!’ I just had the moment of, ‘You lost it.’”

Murgatroyd revealed she had started bleeding two days before rushing to the ER, but she had assumed it was her period. The couple, who have been married since 2017, have been trying to grow their family more for years.

Peta believes her body was unable to fight off COVID-19 and sustain her pregnancy that was still in the very early stages. “I felt like I was dying, but then I obviously knew what had happened. It was just all too much for my body and I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me.”

While talking with People, Peta admitted that while she and her husband would love to give Shai a sibling, they are done trying, naturally. The wife and mom admitted that this particular miscarriage was her third over the last several years.

Three losses were her personal limit, Peta admitted. While she doesn’t have cysts on her ovaries, she says doctors have diagnosed her with PCOS, which has caused her to experience hormonal imbalances.

“I’m somebody who prides herself on health [and] wellness. I exercise every single day. But as I came to realize, that doesn’t really go hand-in-hand with the reproductive system,” Murgatroyd admitted.

Currently, Peta and Maks are working with fertility doctors and have started the in vitro fertilization process. “For the first time in nearly two years, I feel excited.”

She admitted that getting answers to her question “why,” has left her in a “happier place.”
