11-Year-Old Gets the Incredible Gift of New Hands for Christmas

Gavin Sumner, who was born without hands, received a truly miraculous gift this year for Christmas. The 11-year-old boy from Clarksville, Tennessee was given a new pair of hands made by a 3-D printer.

According to the Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle, Gavin and his family were invited to a Christmas party at the Montgomery County Mayor’s Office. During the gathering, Gavin was presented with a customized pair of hands by Mayor Jim Durrett.

Gavin’s mother contacted Anthony Economos, the president of marketing and product development firm Bedstone Creative, after Gavin added 3-D hands to his Christmas wish list. The gift was made possible after the local community came together to do something special for the child.

“Today was nothing short of amazing!” Gavin’s mom, Kori Suitter, shared in a Facebook post. “Not only did Gavin’s wish for hands come true, but they were presented to him by the mayor! I am so thankful for everyone who came together to make this a surprise for Gavin.”

Gavin was born without most of his hands because of a vascular disruption that caused a lack of blood flow to various parts of his body. He is also missing part of his tongue and his left foot.

While Gavin has historically been unable to do things like riding a bicycle, his determination is astounding.

“I always try to push myself to try and see if I can do it,” said Gavin “But, I do take in the fact that there are some things I can’t do, and now I’m having to accept that.”

“I came to the fact that God chose me for a purpose, and I’m going to live that purpose,” he added. “I hope my purpose is to inspire other people.”

Gavin’s new pair of hands took about one year to create. The company will now be able to quickly create new hands for Gavin as he grows.
