Hilary Duff Gets Real About How Isolating Motherhood Can Be

Hilary Duff has had many successes on- and off-screen — she’s a popular actress and singer, author, songwriter, designer, and producer. None of those roles, though, quite prepared her for becoming a mom to son Luca at the young age of 24.

Duff recently opened up about her experience being one of the first of her friends to have a baby on The Motherly Podcast. She shared with host Liz Tenety, “It was a little isolating in the beginning because I didn’t have any friends that had babies yet.”

Like many moms, Duff struggled with feeling lonely at times and losing her sense of self. Of being a new mom, Duff shared, “I knew it was the most important, biggest job in the world, but it looks different once you’re just in the household with the baby yourself all the time.”

Duff, who split with Luca’s dad in 2015, is now engaged to Matthew Koma. The couple welcomed their daughter, Banks, last October.

As a second-time mom, Duff feels a bit more relaxed than she did the first time. “I worry less at night when she’s sleeping. I feel like with Luca, I would stare at the monitor all night long.”

Though Luca wasn’t thrilled when Duff first told him he would be getting a sister, he fell in love with his baby sister from the moment they met.

Duff called Luca a “top-notch big brother.”
