Culinary queen Ina Garten and her beloved Jeffrey Garten have been hunkered down at home in the Hamptons. Over the past couple of weeks, Ina has treated us to some top-notch food content on Instagram. Years of hosting parties and developing recipes have prepared Ina for this moment in the best ways. She can whip up a meal with whatever is on hand and then explain in detail how you can replicate her ingenuity.
She’s been offering recipes to help you pass the time, tips for how to organize your pantry and freezer, and of course her signature dry wit. But, on April 1, she shared a cocktail recipe that felt so wonderfully wacky and somehow exactly what fans would expect.
Ina Garten shared a now-viral video of her making a cosmopolitan cocktail.
The video starts innocently enough. Ina says, “During these stressful times, it’s important to keep traditions alive. My favorite tradition is the cocktail hour.”
We’re listening.
“So, I’m going to make you my favorite cosmopolitan,” she continues, “and you probably have all the ingredients you need right in the house.”

At this point in the video, things really start to take off as Ina pours an entire bottle of vodka into a pitcher.
Ina instructs viewers to use “good” vodka and proceeds to dump an entire bottle of said vodka into a pitcher. “Just pour it right in!” she says.
The vodka is followed by Cointreau then cranberry juice. As she’s filling the entire pitcher with cocktail components, she asks, “How easy is that?”
The line has become one of her catchphrases over the years and it really adds to the hilarity of what viewers were watching.
Ina says ‘it’s very important” that your lime juice is ‘freshly squeezed.’
Ina then adds half a cup of lime juice to the mix and advises that the juice “must be freshly squeezed. That’s very important.”
With all the ingredients in the pitcher, Ina produces a giant cocktail shaker filled with ice. As she’s pouring the pitcher’s contents into the shaker, she says to herself, “Oh! This smells so good! Just what everyone needs, right?”
Yes.
Ina demonstrates how to properly mix the cocktail.
Ina says, “Shake it up! You have to shake it for thirty seconds. You have lots of time, it’s not a problem.”
Ina’s not wrong. “During a crisis, cocktail hour can be almost any hour.” Ina dropping truth bombs is giving us life!
Finally, Ina is ready to serve her cosmo.
“The last detail is really important: a good martini glass. I’m going to show you the one I like,” Ina says before producing a martini glass that’s as tall as her torso.
She pours her giant cocktail into her giant martini glass and feels us with giant joy! “I would say, in these times, this [the huge cocktail] is really important.”
Ina enjoys the fruits of her labor and takes a satisfying sip of her beverage.
There’s a lot of laughter in the final few seconds of this gem of a video. Before she takes a sip of the drink Ina says, “Doesn’t that look fabulous? Nice and cold and lots of it? And, I would say, stay safe, have a very good time, and don’t forget the cocktails.”
When this is all over, “Stay safe, have a very good time, and don’t forget the cocktails,” will be immortalized on t-shirts, bumper stickers, aprons, totes, and tattoos. Have you ever heard better advice?
The video concludes with Ina giggling gleefully into her bowl, we mean glass and then saying, “Mmmmmm! Delicious!”
Ina is a national treasure and we needed this video more than we knew.
It may have been April Fool’s Day when Ina posted the video, but we’re going to take her advice nevertheless. After 24 hours of sharing the video, it had received over 2 million views and thousands of thankful comments.
Keep laughing folks! Consider hosting a virtual cocktail hour with your friends or even a virtual dance party. Do whatever you need to do to stay connected to people who care for and love you. We’ll get through this.
