Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer Reveal How Their Onscreen Chemistry Affected Their Real-Life Relationship With Each Other

In HBO MAX‘s Friends: The Reunion, Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer revealed that Ross and Rachel’s chemistry wasn’t entirely acting for either of them!

When the host of the special, James Corden asked the stars of one of the most popular TV sitcoms of all time, running on NBC from 1994 to 2004, if there had been any offscreen romances between the cast, David Schwimmer jumped in quickly.

He explained, “I mean, the first season, I had a major crush on Jen. At some point, we were crushing hard on each other. But it was like two ships passing because one of us was always in a relationship and we never crossed that boundary. We respected that.” To which Matt LeBlanc quickly replied, “Bulls**t” under his breath. Not even their fellow castmates could believe they kept what they had on camera a secret!

Jennifer Aniston was disappointed that the first time they kissed was onscreen.

She made it clear that truly nothing was going on behind the scenes in an unsatisfying anecdote. “Honestly, I remember saying one time to David, ‘It’s going to be such a bummer if the first time you and I actually kiss is going to be on national television. Sure enough, first time we kissed was in that coffee shop.”

But Jennifer Aniston found the positive side nonetheless, explaining, “So we just channeled all of our adoration and love for each other into Ross and Rachel.”

That doesn’t mean they could keep the rest of the cast in the dark.

David Schwimmer told everyone how they would channel their feelings instead. “When we had breaks from rehearsal, there were moments where we would cuddle on the couch.” With Jennifer Aniston finishing his sentence, “We would spoon and fall asleep on the couch.”

Schwimmer commented that “I’m thinking, ‘How did not everyone know we were crushing on each other?'” To which the cast made very clear that they all “knew.” He finished by acknowledging that it “was a situation we couldn’t do anything about.”

Then, Courtney Cox put a brighter spin on their predicament, “How great though, ultimately, because if you had [acted on it] and it didn’t work out, it would have not probably been as great [on the show].”
