Katie Holmes doesn’t talk about her 16-year-old daughter often, but she offered some rare words about her in a recent interview with Glamour – where she’s featured on the cover of the magazine’s April issue. She spoke about her role as a parent and why she tries to keep her daughter out of the public eye.
“What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her. I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She’s an incredible person,” Katie said in her interview after being asked how she would describe being the mother of a teenage girl.
She was also asked if her daughter wears any clothes that remind her of the clothes she wore back in the 1990s. While Katie is excited that the ’90s style is back,’ it makes her feel old and she’s said she didn’t really save any of her clothes from back then – so she doesn’t have any hand-me-downs for her daughter.

Katie Holmes has one daughter – Suri Cruise – who she shares with Tom Cruise. The former couple began dating in April 2005 and became engaged just seven weeks later. On the one-year anniversary of their first date, Holmes and Cruise welcomed their first and only child. They married on Nov. 18, 2006.
In June 2012, after five and a half years of marriage, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise and it was finalized the following month after the two signed a settlement. Holmes was given custody of her daughter, Suri, and formed an extremely close bond with her over the years. Now, she’s growing up.
Suri has already been featured in two of her mother’s films – albeit not in front of the camera. With her incredible voice, Suri’s singing can be heard in Alone Together (2022) and Rare Objects (2023) – the latter of which stars Holmes, who also wrote and directed it. The film is set to be released on April 14th.
“I hope she always does something on my films. I always ask her. But both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects and you become a family with people. And it’s this safe, beautiful, creative space,” she said of working with Suri. Take a listen:
Katie Holmes’ Daughter Has Seen ‘Dawson’s Creek’
Katie Holmes began her acting career in 1997 and it didn’t take long for her to make a name for herself. She was asked to audition for a new show called Dawson’s Creek – ultimately winning the lead role of Joey Potter. She was a regular during all six seasons and appeared in all 128 episodes of the show.
Holmes was just 19 years old when she joined Dawson’s Creek in 1998 – which was around the same age her daughter, Suri, is now. In an interview with Variety a few weeks ago, Holmes was asked if her daughter has seen the television show – which she has – and they apparently had a good laugh over it.
“She has seen “Dawson’s Creek,” and I think it’s probably weird since she’s a teenager. I’m not like, “You need to watch mommy’s work.” But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it. It’s wild to have a daughter who’s almost the same age as I was when I began all this,” Holmes told Variety in late-March.
