Katy Perry Calls Breakup with Russell Brand the ‘First Breaking of My Idealistic Mind’

Katy Perry reflected on her previous marriage to Russell Brand for a new interview that aired in Australia. The marriage began in 2010 and lasted 14 months before ending in 2011.

In a new interview with 60 Minutes Australia, the pop star discusses everything from her religious upbringing to her new role as a mom. The most revealing moments of the taped interview, however, involve the candid discussion of her marriage to Brand which she compared to a “tornado.”

Katy Perry says marrying Russell Brand felt like “everything happening at once.”

“I was having great success at 23, 24, and 25 and then I met someone that was interesting and stimulating,” the songstress revealed. “It was just like a tornado, it was everything happening at once.”

Perry went on to characterize the breakup as the “first breaking of my idealistic mind.” She also admits that she’s “always resonated with friction and resistance and challenges,” in her relationships and that she’s accepted that about herself.

Watch the interview:

In a July 2013 cover story with Vogue, Perry explained that Brand was the one who ended their marriage when he sent her a text message informing her that he would be filing for divorce.

“He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him,” Perry told the outlet. “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”

We still can’t get over Brand ending a marriage via text, but luckily things seem to be going better for Perry this time around.

During her video call with 60 Minutes, Perry also spoke about her current relationship with fiancé, Orlando Bloom, calling it, “a healthy frictional, very open, very communicative, nothing is swept under the mat type of relationship.”

“It’s like, we should probably walk into the other room to discuss something where we disagree because we’ll just do it in public,” the singer added. “But I think if we can get to the ends of our lives together, we’ll be each other’s greatest teachers.”

We’d just like to point out that she used the word “frictional” for her relationships with both Bloom and Brand.

She continued, “Dating is different. Weekend lovers? That’s fun, that’s candy. This is solid. This is like the main course.”

Perry and Bloom welcomed their first child together, Daisy Dove last month. The couple released a statement at the time, saying in part, “We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter.”

The couple was set to marry in Japan earlier this month, but the coronavirus derailed those plans and they, instead, decided to postpone.

Perry seems to be enjoying parenting and has shared some fun moments with fans including a meme of a woman throwing a baby over a ravine. The meme is in reference to the album, “Smile” which she is currently promoting (and why she joined 60 Minutes Australia).

Later, she shared another photo with fans, a postpartum selfie that’s probably the most relatable thing on the planet.

In the photo, Perry is seen rocking her postpartum undies, a pumping bra, a messy bun, and a look that says, “Yes, I did just give birth to a human being.” As she wrote on the photo her “hair and makeup” were brought to you by “exhaustion.”

We stan a relatable celebrity mom. It was great to hear her open up about so many aspects of her life including her current relationship and how she’s moved on from Brand. We look forward to any new updates from this diva mom.
